I just installed a new clutch and pressure plate, but can't put the transmission in gear without severe grinding. I have tried adjusting pressure plate fingers and clutch pedal. but nothing helps. I put it in gear with the engine off and crank it with clutch pedal pushed in, and it works fine (tractor doesn't move unless pedal is released). When pedal is released, tractor pulls fine. Also installed a new release bearing and pilot bushing (Agco loves them, $75.00 plus just for bushing). Re-assembly went very smooth. Any suggestions?

Did you put a dab of grease on the pilot bushing?? How much clearance between throwout brg and finger tips ?? Engine fully idled down when trying to shift into gear ??

I did not put any grease on the pilot bushing. I adjusted clearance just enough so that throw out bearing would not rotate with pedal fully released. Engine is fully idled down when trying to shift into gear. Also, would it be advisable to put any grease on the clutch shaft (I didn't do that either). It looks like I'll be going back into this one.

A little light lube (WD40) on the splines and then trial fit the disc to KNOW that it is free is what I always do. Wipe off excess of oil from clutch shaft.

Okay, and what do you suggest for the pilot bushing? Is it likely this lack of lube is the problem?

A friend of mine had the exact same thing happen with a Series 3 D12. He also put in a new clutch disc, pressure plate and the Agco bushing.

He was not able to figure it out so he split it apart again, I came over and with some measuring tools and measured the I.D. of the bushing and the O.D. of the shaft and there was no clearance on the bushing, it was basically a 1:1 fit.

I took the flywheel home with the bushing in it and bored it out to give it about .004" clearance.

After putting it together again if worked just fine. It appears the Agco bushings don't have clearance figured in.

Just had the same problem with a 175. Wound up breaking the tractor three times. The clutch rebuilder and I could not find anything definite. I also had the flywheel ground when it was out. Ended sanding the outer edge of the clutch and slightly chamfered the outer edge. reassembled and worked fine. I don't know if that is your problem but that solved mine.

I would love to see pictures of the transmission shafts that enter the clutch disk and splines in the flywheel. You do have splines in the flywheel?

What serial number is your tractor?

Clutch disk must freely slide on the transmission input shaft.

Clutch disk must be flat and uniform in thickness.

Clutch disk must be installed in the correct orientation (not flipped 180).

Clutch fingers to throw-out bearing adjustment must be in spec.

When throw-out bearing moves the pressure plate rearward, it should move

straight back and remain parallel to the flywheel.

We recently had a thread about dragging clutch on a d17 (or 170-175).

Also recently had a thread about D10/D12 PTO+ hydraulics, transmission shafts, pto quill shaft and pilot bearing.

If the quill shaft driving the pto and hydraulic pump had enough friction with the transmission input shaft, perhaps from rust, bend, crud, old oil etc, that may cause it to rotate and appear to be a clutch dragging situation. Speculation, I don't even know what it looks like, hence my beg for pictures.

Test it before you split it !! Engine OFF. PTO in gear. Transmission in neutral. Someone sits on the seat and holds the clutch pedal clear down. You clamp a big vice grips on the PTO shaft and see how hard it turns...both ways.....make a mental note of how much effort it takes. Compare this to how it works AFTER you split and reassemble.

Suppose you could run it a while with clutch down and in gear to make sure disc isn't just a shade too large and may burnish off? Maybe the clutch shaft will rearrange the metal in the bushing too? Doubt you can be so lucky but not out much to give it a go.

Thanks everyone for the help. I took some pictures, but can’t seem to get them to post. It seems that some grease inside the pilot bushing solved my troubles. I wonder if I would have been better to have used an anti-seize lubricant as opposed to regular grease. Any thoughts?
