I have a 2 inch by 8 inch stroke AC hydraulic remote ram for a high pressure system. It is a one way ram. I replaced the packing and now it will not extend all the way. It would also do this before I replaced the packing so I know that this is not the problem. i have also changed the hose and end and used two different tractors. The ram is getting a full shot of oil. Any ideas???

It has two brass guides and a sleve also. can these get worn and bind up? They do not appear to be in too bad of shape.

Does it have a releif valve on the end with no hose? Are you sure the piston isnt bent? Also how is your tractor hydrualics set up? single double? Brian S

If it is an Allis cylinder, the only thing that stops the cylinder rod from coming out is the external snap ring on the rod. I don't think the guide bushing could bind on the rod to stop it. Now I'll be up half the night trying to figure out what's going on in that cylinder. LOL

What are the chances there is oil trapped on the other side of the piston causing it to hydraulic lock before it fully extends?

Roddo, there is no other side on an AC cylinder. There is no piston. It is a displacement cylinder and the oil pumped in displaces the rod.

No bent piston. One way Allis Chalmers Ram Ram. Oil is not bypassing, like he said there is nothing to by pass.

I even tried to beat it out with a hammer and chunk of wood but no go.

It seems to me there was only one bronze guide bushing on cylinders I've worked on. It is in a counterbore just below the packing, in the gland. I don't know what could get between the rod snap ring and the gland to block movement. Did you have the cylinder all the way apart or just dig out the packing and replace it? If you haven't had it all the way apart, someone may have assembled it wrong in a previous life. You might want to remove the gland from the cylinder with the rod intact so you can see what is going on. Charlie

Yes I took it all the way apart. We got the ram new I believe. It has two brass guides and a sleve that fits over them. is it possible the snap ring is hitting these guides?

There shouldn't be any way for the guides to get through the bottom of the gland. The bottom of the gland is where the snap ring contacts to stop travel. ?????????
