I've got a curved shifted WD that shifts pretty good, but there is some "up and down" play in the shifter (and I know that can lead to slipping over the rails).

If I open up the boot and take out the snap ring, can I put some washers in there to shim it back tight to help this situation?

Does anyone know off hand what size shims/washers I would use for this?

First thing to try is use a second snap ring to hold things down.

GG,
I have built "UP' one of my tractor shifter spheres and one on my truck too. May not be legal but sure seems to help. The shifter actually drops down into the forks too far when the socket or ball are worn.
 Hope that helps??
 Regards,
 Chris

Interesting, I may need to keep that in mind when I look at mine. I have another snap ring coming and a washer as I think mine have some wear (may double up the snap rings), but I forgot that the bottom can wear as well. I guess I have to watch when shifting if it "rises" up on me a bit?

GG, here's a link to Sugarmaker's excellent shifter thread; https://www.allischalmers.com/forum/wd45-shift-tower-details-picture-heavy_topic169724_page1.html" rel="nofollow - https://www.allischalmers.com/forum/wd45-shift-tower-details-picture-heavy_topic169724_page1.html
Lots of pictures and details.

Yep that's a great thread. I've got oversized pins coming and an extra snap ring and replacement washer. So hopefully I can tear into it in a few weeks here.
