I have an early WD-45 (3 bolt WFE) that came to me with 12 V electrical system. I haven't checked the starter yet, (Suspect it to be 6v) but the generator is 12v and the system is pos ground. Is it possible that 12v was an option (it is gas, I think the diesel was 12)? Or is this just an early 12v conversion with the generator rather than an alternator. Engine must have been replaced at some time because it has no serial #.

Not factory 12 volt. The D-17s were 12 volt positive ground utilizing a generator rather than an alternator. Its a plain ol' Delco-Remy Generator so there were plenty of em around in the GM cars back in the day.

I think the WDs and WD-45s could be made to look like stock 6 volt using the 12 volt Generator and a little ingenuity in locating the regulator and maybe placing a "dummy" cutout relay on the generator. I assume somebody out there has done that?

Dave - You can use a DR 12 gen and a VR605 reg. Got my reg at AutoZone. That reg is a replacement for a 55 Chev V8. I also changed from pos to neg gnd.
