I overhaulled a CA Allis Chalmers Tractor. I put new rings, rod bearings, and had the valves ground in the engine. I have it all back together now and it is in time. My problem is cranking it over. It is difficult to crank with a hand crank and the starter won't hardly spin the engine over. I can take all of the spark plugs out and it will crank over fine. It is still on a 6 volt system and I have a new battery in it that is fully charged. I took the starter off and it spins freely. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what I should do for this problem. Thanks.

What size of batterycables did you use? They really need to be at least 0 gauge or 00 is better. 6Volts really needs the large cables to work well. Both on the lead to the starter, and the ground.

You may also have a weak battery and/or ground path obstructions. Try starting with a known 12 volt battery. Isolate the ignition circuit from the starting circuit by disconnecting the 6V lead at the the starter terminal and run a jumper from the 6 V terminal to provide 6V current to the coil post opposite the one that goes into your distributor. Jump the starter with the 12 volt battery (Be very sure the tractor is in neutral 1st!!!). If it turns over easily, you either have a poor battery, cables are too small, and/or you have ground path obstructions (paint, corroded connections, etc). Good luck

When I rebuilt my CA motor it was the same as you describe, I could barely get it to turn with the hand crank. I put 12 volts to the starter and it spun the motor over ok. Once I ran it a few times and it started to loosen up I could turn it more easily with the hand crank.
My CA when complete will be fully 12 volt, It has a 12 volt generator and a 12 volt coil. I just need to get around to making the harness for it. I went to the local hardware store and got some stranded 10-3 cable to make the harness from, it should be nice when done, and will have less than $20 in it.

Greg has a very good point. Check where the starter fits into the block. If you painted things it needs to be clean where the starter contacts the engine.

Have you had the engine running at all since the overhaul? You might try tow starting the tractor. If it tow starts easily and still doesn't want to turn over with the starter you'll know it's a starter issue. The 6v system should turn it over with no problem if everything (battery/starter/cables/connections/ground, etc.) is in order.

Have you tried pulling the plugs and cranking it? A little oil down the cylinders and cranked just enough to get the oil flowing might help just don't want to heat up the starter motor.

Thanks for all the helpful hints. We got our CA started. We hooked the coil and distributor up to a six volt battery and put a 12 volt battery on the starter and it started right off. The tractor smoked a lot when it first started up and then it had fuel issues and died. It was good to finally get it running.

Dad always said the bigger the battery cables the better. It takes alot to crank them without an overhaul.

It is a great feeling hearing a rebuilt engine fire up for the 1st time (and afterwards; a fresh engine is great sounding). The smoke was probably due to the assembly lube burning off. Take care of the fuel issues and be sure you have good ground paths and the correct size battery cables and it should fire up and run just fine on the 6V battery.
I am finishing up rebuilding my D12 engine and hope to have smoke coming out the exhaust pipe this weekend (and after the initial smoke, a clean exhaust plume).
