bride and i drove up to Oshkosh Wi for the Experimental Aircraft Flyin. Bypassed the communist stronghold Chicago by taking the ferry across the lake. Expensive, but worth missing Criminaltown. Survived a tornado in Ripon Wi, and had my first Spotted Cow (brought a case home).
Couple of notes, does everyone in Mi have a huge PU with a boat on the back and a license to do 90mph? or did it just seem like it? Actually, it seems to me that speed limits have been banned entirely in Mi. And, I spotted a derelict G, 9 mile marker, 496, to the right going south, looks like a stone and grave site. Oh, and what in the world are 'crash investigation sites'?
had a great time, but, now back to the grindstone!

You missed my place by maybe a dozen miles.

Glad you enjoyed it, Spotted Cow is my beer of choice. On the rare occasions I drink.

Hmm - speed in MI - last time i was there it cost me $120 for the ticket - Cop said he was hot on all drivers for the trucking company and stopped every one he sees as he generated a lot of revenue from company drivers and the company . ( A H ) Only ticket in 40 years I have managed to get !
------------- Life lesson: If you’re being chased by a lion, you’re on a horse, to the left of you is a giraffe and on the right is a unicorn, what do you do? You stop drinking and get off the carousel.

Lou I'm sure you drove Interstates here in Michigan and if you were on I94 between Detroit and Kalamazoo you found people driving like NASCAR! Yes we have posted speed limits and yes many ignore them! And in my travels across this country I have found drivers speeding to be prevalent wherever I go! As Coke said Trucks are different. DOT is everywhere but for some reason Canadian Truckers are always speeding. They can be spotted always in the left lane with a moose bumper on the front!

No, no speed limit in MI. You just gotta watch it near the end of the month(Quotas).
Crash investigation sites are pull offs with a little more room to investigate. And then you are not in the way of traffic where you had your accident. And then you have no evidence of what actually occurred. And then the cop can give you both a ticket.
Did you go across on the Badger or the fast boat?

Fast boat. Next time the Badger. both are a bit pricey, but, I believe the Badger is a little less. |

Yes, Mark, 94. I agree, you gotta' work hard to get a ticket in a lot of states, Pa included, but that stroll down 94 was exceptional. I was bumping 90 several times and had people 'drafting' me to get past! even in the right lane, if I wasn't doing 80, they were bunching up behind me. don't get me wrong, I have no problem going that fast, as long as everybody is on their game. My only irritation was the jerks that would come up behind me and tailgate when I couldn't get out of their way fast enough to suit them, when there was traffic in front of me and beside me.
Unfortunately, Coke is right, I know there is a different standard for truckers, and I am aware that in some cases it is a money maker for some local municipalities.....to the point of perhaps stretching the law.

FYI, for anybody that may be interested concerning the ferries and firearms, the only requirement for my firearm was that it was unloaded and in a different location of the vehicle than the ammo. It could not be on my person on the boat. Although I am legal conceded carry in Mi and Wi, Federal law says no guns on the boat. They looked under the hood of the vehicle, and used mirrors under the vehicle, but did not look in the vehicle. Nor did they scan individuals. In any case, Nice thing about it is I miss Chicago.

Yeah, speed limits are usually ignored suggestions.
Did you notice everyone mash the pedal the instant you crossed the OH/MI line? Always laughed about that when I lived in OH and came home to visit. OH sucks.

what was more noticeable was the other way around. After being sucked along at speed, we hit the Ohio line and it was like 'Lucy hit the brakes'. Like I said, I'm a bit of a heavy right meself, so I really didn't mind much, but, I did find it remarkable. |

Lifelong Michigan resident here, I drive an average of probably 500 miles weekly all across the lower half of the lower peninsula for work and usually about 300 every weekend to visit my weekend houses in the center of the lower. A couple observations: Drivers on the east side of the state are much more courteous than those on the west, I avoid Grand Rapids/Holland at any expense, especially between Friday at noon and Sunday night. The diesel jockeys yanking campers and boats seem to constantly feel the need to prove the abilities of their trucks and how fast they can pull them. Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana drivers drive like they were just released from prison, or on the run from the law. I usually drive in the right lane at 68 mph, right with the trucks and encounter way less stress, and usually get there just as fast. Many times on weekends my wife and I have to drive two cars north because of work schedules, I take the two lanes, she takes the Interstate through Grand Rapids, I drive 102 miles stress free, she drives 130 miles and is frazzled after the Grand Rapids/131 experience, and we arrive within 10 minutes of each other. The Badger is awesome, I used to work races at Road America and would finish up at about 9:00pm on Friday evenings, drive to Manitowoc, board the boat, get a stateroom and sleep, get off the boat, take an easy drive to the lake and have my weekend underway by 8:30am, driving through Chicago would have taken all night and pretty much ruined the weekend.

Whenever I go west I go either through the U.P. or below Chcago. Just isn't worth the hassle!
