Not sure where to put this, but what diesel engine was/is under the hood of a TRUE military machine ? Did that engine carry on to the "civilian" version  of an H1 ?
By "what engine", I'm asking about manufacturer Wink . Thanks

Standard GM either 6.2 or 6.5 Diesel.  Fuel and electrical components are different Mil to Civil.

Thanks , a guy I was working for today talked about the "military" wanting to see if the Hummer could run on AV fuel to facilitate "fueling logistics" in various parts of the world Smile

Diesel, straight diesel.

Only the Deuce and halfs with the multi fuel engine could utilize different fuels.  Were a PITA to do so with, had mix charts for oils gasoline grades alcohol diesel and gear lube.  NONE of which ran as good as straight diesel.

Oldest son was an Army Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic. He told me the Hummers he worked on were 6.2 G.M. Diesel. All Military Vehicles burned JP8 aviation fuel same as Helicopters and M1 tanks. He said the Hummers were all underpowered before they armored them. Youngest Son who was a Cavalry Scout and Hummer Truck Commander in Iraq said their Up Armored Hummer they had to Rev the engine just to run the radio. And when fully loaded with Ammo and a 50cal machine gun in the roof he said it would hardly pull itself!

Hummer = Vehicle designed by committee, everyone want this and wanted that but they forgot the upgrade package (the power to get it up the grade). In the initial stages of planning the Hummer was to use a Deutz turbo/diesel. That idea was scrapped due to to not being made in America.
I know someone that got one of the first ones available for civilians, it was massively underpowered and got the worst MPG of anything short of a tank.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

military hummers had a GM 6.2 later license built by AM general.  The Military ones used a redblock casting they were better than the GM produced ones use in the GM trucks. I drove them all over in the desert and they were underpowered before up armor. we never up armored ours they were used as flightline transportation and while we were condidered in theater we were a long ways away in Saudi. the civilian ones were equipped with 6.5 and later 6.5 turbos.

Was it a "fairly" easy swap ? What did you do with the fuel pump in the original tank ?

it was just like putting in any other diesel engine. my burb was a diesel before. had the 6.2 in it, got over 400,000. miles out of it's original engine. the new to me diesel engine came out of a Chev truck from the military. it has under 50,000 miles on the new engine.

Thanks, I "kind of" read it that you swapped a diesel for a dead gasser Embarrassed
