hi from Australia. I have not long owned a hd11 b and while playing around with the steer clutches  it made a crunching sound on the right side. After draining final drive oil it had metal in it so I took the cap of the the sprocket and there was more metal. looking in parts book that came with it  were some  notes that have been written and all so pant does not match  it has had some work done on drive  at some stage.  I am thinking the sprocket shaft and drive gear splines are worn.  being this is a 60 year old dozer can I pull the back cover plate off and weld the shaft to the drive gear? if this is the problem or do I keep using it like it is until it either  finish the job I brought it for or it lets go and then fix. will it do any more damage ? It will still spin both tracks pushing at this stage. Parts if I can find them are going to be second hand and probably well worn. thanks scott

You should never weld inside final drive parts because it will brook again a couple hours later and make more damages.
