I think I've been led a stray by my local parts dealer... I have a wd45 tractor with a Gleaner E engine in it. When I went in for some tune up parts, the spark plugs they sold me were AC Delco R45CS, which seem to have fouled rather quickly. Could someone please let me know what is the best plug and gap setting for the Gleaner E engine? The person at the parts counter had good intentions, but i don't think they understood what I was saying...

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,

WD45 uses AC 45's but D17's/E's have the long reach plugs so there are more letters behind the # 45.I think the "R" means resistor which you don't need.That's all I can tell you.

Does that mean the Gleaner E and the D17 have the same engine?

Same as later 17's that used the full flow oil system(63?) other than the govenor setup and maybe the carb.Not really familiar with what they did on E's in the governor setup cause I havent been around one.On the A2 gleaner I had,the carb had a swinging lever on the throttle shaft that the throttle cable hooked to and another fixed lever that the gov worked.It was setup for full throttle mode and the cable just pulled it back to idle or anywhere inbetween.You don't have any governor reaction at part throttle with that setup.Tractors use "variable speed" gov and combines use "limiting speed" gov.

Thank you Steve. You got me back on the right track. I pulled one of the plugs shined a flashlight in the sparkk plug hole. I defintely need need a longer plug and i'm sure I can go back to Napa and see what they have for a D17. They just didn't have any info on Gleaners and I guess they gave me WD45 plugs.

AC Delco #45XL or #45XLS or R45XL or R45XLS.

You will be better served with Autolite plugs in your A-C engine.

That's it.The XL means long thread and the S means extended tip.The center electrode and porcelin stick out of the plug further.
