I feel more comfortable traveling by train. I remember when I went to travel around Germany and it was pretty cool. I went last winter and the beauty of the cities really impressed me. The cities were like in a fairy tale, there was snow everywhere, everything looked magical. It was very cool and very beautiful, especially when traveling by train. I also used the website to monitor the flights of all trains in Germany. I am very glad that I met the guys there, with whom I communicate to this day and I plan to go to Germany again this winter to see them again.

I've seen on the news that same thing.  And they aren't cleaning the rooms everyday. and they have made some cuts to the breakfast bar.  I guess this crap is hitting every walk of life.

Airlines were a nightmare for our trip to Hawaii
Our flight out had problems and a long delay. We wound up leaving in the middle of the night and driving to KC to fly out.
All the planes leaving Hawaii were over booked and not letting passengers on. Our plane left way late. When we got to Denver out flight to KC was way over booked. They offered passengers $1000 each to take a later flight. My sister-in-law my wife and I talked to them about it. Wife and sil flew to Minneapolis then KC and I flew straight to Arkansas and had an uncle pick me up. Our next trip is paid for.
Jenny’s sister and son arrived in SC a day and a half late.

Building a nightly rental cabin right now. It’s in a small village of cabins. The owner lady also owns a couple old restored hotels. She told me they’ve rented more rooms this summer than they ever have. She’s having to work her butt off helping clean rooms and keep up. She’s started hiring old folks and giving them a place to stay because the young will not work. I see her personally bringing breakfast to the guests at the cabins every morning.
It’s definitely a different world.

That's one of the reasons I bought a crew cab when I bought my new F250

Hotels/motels are a business, have to make money to remain in business and have been over $100 night for decent facilities for over a decade.
Can still find Mom and Pop places but have had bad experiences where stopped pulling into those as the same for no name third rate facilities. Low maintenance can develop some nasty secondary issues including bedbugs or mold buildup which if have allergies can lead to real health problems and while not at home.

We do not stay at 5star hotels generally but split it out as to decent name branded stops. Pay a little more but not had a ‘bad’ experience just a few odd ones.

Local car club I belong to moved the 3 day summer cruise planned last year to August of this year. The hotel we are staying at came close to honoring last year's prices ($10.00 a night increase to $129.00 a night) with reservations starting in March and the special "club rate" ending last month. Talked to a member who forgot to make reservations and called the hotel a few days ago. He was quoted $189.00 a night.

Was *forced* to drive cross country couple weeks back.  Was sudden so no reservations.  During the weekdays we were hit ~$180/night.  We hit central moontana on the weekend... HOLLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Motels/hotels booked solid with nothing going on in the area, we could not get a room for my weight in gold!  Found one room, 1.... at a motel 6 yet, they were asking $600/night... well phluck.... told them to shove it.  Drove 18 hours that day and still wound up paying way too much 2 hours in the sticks from the hiway.  Anywayz, here in s**te-attle area, we are in a hotel for a month, room service is once a week and breakfast bar... no longer available.  Glad I like cold pizza from brekkie... it's nuts!!

last hotel i stayed in was before the corona virus, and it was at a casino, paid $139. but made the mistake of paying with a CC. should have paid cash. they sold my info to other places and i was bombarded with calls from all over for a year! then found out that if i would have went and got a players club card at the casino first that i would only have had to pay $99. for a room.

Notice rather excellent English for someone who says he is in France.

And better SPELLING than some long time frequent Posters.

.

Last minute deals?  Showing up cold at check-in desk will only receive full price rooms, maybe 10% discount for government/AAPR discounts, etc.  Only way to receive much of a discount is 6 months more or less ahead of time, hotels, car rentals, airlines/train rides.  For an example, 6 months prior to a planned visit to Seattle, I checked on price to take a train sleeper.  Was decent price for 2 on round trip ride.  Did not purchase at that time, need to talk to wife/daughter being visited.  After getting my ... duckies... all in a row, went back on line to purchase and damn ticket price had little more than doubled.  Didn't take that ride, I'll be driving shortly.

Yes, this thread has been dead for 4 years but, prices have gone up, motels rose higher than inflation.  If you're going to make a trip, go for it.  Yes it cost more than a few years back, don't wait for prices to fall much.

I only make reservations at the main destinations I go to.  I am taking a trip in a couple weeks, like said only made reservations at end destination.  We do many trips a year, have never needed to make reservations along the trip.  Only had problems on one trip, hotels 99% booked and $100/night joints raised to $4-600/night because of unscrupulous managers.

During tourist seasons, we plan on driving distance between each stop daily, wife will start calling around noon looking for a room.  Usually not a problem finding one unless the area is a big tourist trap then we adjust our planned driving time, sometimes shorter, sometimes farther down the road.  We usually limit driving times to 6hr/day being a couple older pharts.  But must be pro-active.

The only way to get cheaper rooms is to use credit card points and the credit card has to be associated with the Hotel.

When I was driving tankers - would run to Chicago and found most hotel/motels would discount up to 50%if had my Company logo shirt on and a CDL license .
Use to get Free coffee with a meal at some places also (except truck stops) - but have not tried it since not driving so unsure what places still do that .
