I bought this kohler carburetor last fall and just installed it today. Took awhile but got it adjusted right and ran better than ever. I do need to make some modifications. The throttle control arm is about 1 inch to the right of carb. Does not line up to work correctly. Any suggestions on solving this problem would be appreciated. Thanks. rrhead(SD)

Almost looks like it's missing a piece in between. Perhaps rig an "L" shaped piece to bridge the gap (?)

I would say, bend a dog leg in the threaded rod, pick yourself up a coupler to screw onto the rod and add a little more threaded rod to the heim end to reach the Carb ball. Viola! Steve@B&B

RRHead (SD): Would you mind sharing the model number or part number for the Kohler carb?

Thank you for the responses. I got it to work yesterday by taking the ball connector off the old carburetor and putting it on the new one. It was about 1/2 inch longer and the throttle rod is still at an angle but worked fine. I bought the new carburetor on E-bay and was under the name Kohler K482 K532. Here is a link to one. Don't know if this is the same seller or not. Thanks again. rrhead(SD)

Did you perform the modifications to the inlet side of the carb body? I know that others have had to use a dremel tool to open up access to an air passage on the inlet "mouth" of these carbs. Essentially making it match the old carb.

Yes, I did the modifications. I printed off the instructions for the mod, but I had someone else do it for me. I am sure someone on here knows the procedure. It now runs better than it has for a long time. rrhead(SD)

I had bought an Ebay Kohler carb for my 720 a couple of years ago, and am concenred I didn't get one that is big enough. The venturi diameter was noticeably smaller than the old carb, and it certainly cut down the power output. I like the adjustability of the load jet being on top, but I'm not liking the low power, it's like a 16hp level now, and it won't pull the 60" mower and itself up my hill it used to fly up. Maybe it's a combination of my points getting tired again too, but I noticed it the day I put the new carb on. It really struggles with the mower! Anyone else have this issue? I'm willing to buy a different carb. Thanks!

It very well could be that that particular Carburetor is a bit on the lean side if you're not producing the power the engine made with the OEM Carb. Those Onan engines are pretty large in the lung department, so more air/fuel may be needed to make the darn near 20HP is supposed to produce. Ya gotta' figure, a Carb for a 16HP engine is gotta' be smaller than one for a 19.5HP engine. I have a spare Carb off my parts 620. When I git' some time I'll havta' measure the venturi and do a little R&D on a replacement Carb that will work if the original isn't available anymore......

I had been fighting the loss of power for a couple years. Mowing, it would lose power going up inclines. Have not mowed with it yet this year but used a drag section on garden and never lost power. InjpumpEd, did you do the modification on the carb before installing? Maybe that's what it corrects. rrhead(SD)

Had fuel problems with my 720 when I brought it home. I really think that's why the p/o sold it. Took a long time but I found an 'affordable' kit. Still almost 50 bucks! Runs like a champ now.
I have one of the cheap E-bay carbs on a 1450 cub. Bought it for the 1650, wound up rebuilding it's original. The cheap one seems to work ok but I prefer the originals if you can keep them working.

I have the orig to measure against, and that was how I knew it was smaller. I did a couple of mods to make it work, and it runs fantastic, just low on hp. It seems to be close on A/F ratio, just less of the air. The linked ebay one above is for a 23hp Kohler, so that may be a much better option for me. I really don't remember what the one I got was meant to fit.

Just to update, I went ahead and bought the 23hp Kohler one linked above for less then $30. It is indeed larger than the previous one I'd bought from ebay, from links on here as well. New one is same bore as original carb. I did get it swapped, and it runs better, but I can tell my points still need attention, as it sounds like the timing is late by the exhaust note, and laboring. I wish electronic conversion was a simple deal on these lol!

Don't forget, these Onan's were severely under-rated in the HP department. According to bore size these should put out roughly 26HP when new, with the HP limiting being done by overall flow from the intake manifold, carb venturi, and exhaust size.
It would take a 26-30HP modern v-twin engine to match the torque these Onan engines produce.
