Well,,long bout maybe 2 years ago,,I posted on here bout an older 200 amp Miller Welder powered by an Onan 2 cylinder on a small 2 wheeled trailer,,,, Well, I got the engine overhauled with new rings, bearings and replaced both the intake valves. Got it all lashed up and engine started right up and ran great. I tested the welder and it also worked many wonderfuls and welded great. The guvnor would rev up as needed so I called it good. Well the plans for the mods up at the place in the mountains got changed, then the wife's health issues started so I parked it in the boat shed and where it's been since then.

A friend of mine was telling his buddy about and he asked me if it for sale as he was really interested in it. SO,,,after an hour or two of moving chit from in front of it,,fina;llt got it out and both tires are ruined from settin, Got it to shop and hooked up a battery and she fired up pretty as you please,,,,but,,,but,,,I wasn't surprised,,,Ya know,,,seein as that's how I fix em,,,,

 Anybody care to venture as to what the value of such a machine?? I know ole Thad had a big interest in the machine,,,,??? THese pics don't show the latest mods as I plumbed both exhausts to the side and down to under the machine to a muffler that exhausts to front of machine.

maybe see what new ones cost  and hopefully get  1/2 (probably a 1/3rd) ??

I know, ya rebuilt it and it looks like new but........it is 'used'.

 heck if you can double your 'input costs' you'd be doing Ok...

 Anyway,,after ole Thad reminded me,,,,the Welder/Generator has been settin for nigh on 5 years or mayhaps even longer,,,,,,I got it out the boat shed and brought it up to the shop and after a few shots of start fluid it finally started ,,,,but it sure did NOT want to,,!! I pulled the carb and cleaned it out as had some gookies build up. Tried it again and still would only run with almost full choke which is indication of starving for fuel. Flushed the gas tank and it had some brownish chit in it and one bug,,,,,?Tried again and engine STILL wants bout 3/4 choke to continue to run and ragged as it is,,,WTF,,? pulled carb again and used a wire pilled from a wire brush and all the crannies I can see are clear and flushed with carb cleaner,,STILL wants 3/4 choke,,,I'm gettin MAD long bout here,,,,,!!!!

 Decide to try the welder part and it won't weld either!! It has a knife switch for switching from welder to generator and so I sandpaper all the knife contacts and VIOLA,,It works again!  BUT it still will NOT run but with almost full choke on,,,So,,after the 5th time of removing the friggin carb AND the manifold, I'm ready to try something else. I've got a buyer waiting on this machine and I am pizzed,,!!!

 I checked out Ebay and Amazon and a new carb can be had for $45, but the mounting bolts of the new carb are 2 1/4" center to center and the old carb is 1 3/4" center to center,,,!!  THose that have worked on these Onans, know the carb bolts to the manifold from the bottom up,,is why manifold has to be removed to work on carb.

 Now,, I have an idea for making a "spacer/adapter" to install the new carb with the 2 1/4" bolt spacing on the 1 3/4" bolt spacing manifold,,,,,,,

Has anybody done something like this,,,??  I should mention that Exact in kind replacement carbs  for the CCKA Onans are available for $356 IF you can find one,,,and I ain't gonna look at them prices,,,,

Did ye check the points to make sure they was absolute clean?

and how about if that thing has any filters or screens in the gasline or tank? 

 Check the fuel pump and clean that too??? So the check valves all work?

  Check the manifold gaskets so you don't have an air leak? 

 Maybe one of the lines is cracked an letting air in?

did ye turn the gas valve on farther than a half turn??

 maybe the gasket in fuel pump made from cereal box done got tired ?  

If there's Ethenol in the fuel and its left for a long time without any Stabil or additive of some sort in it, the fuel turns to crap and plugs everything up. Makes a mess, and ya pull yer' hair out tryin' to get it goin' again. Don't ask me how I know that!

 GREAT Points JC, Thad and Steve,,, OH and Shameless,,,,no fair,,,"IF" I'm rememberin correctly,,,you had quoted me a price for the Chevy Allis,,that was a few songs lower then the Miller is worth,,, Now,,I maybe havin a few issues with my danged old memory on the price you gave me,,,,and when I get these little bitty issues worked out,,,,,,AND,,,,AND,,,I WILL,,,!! I will have a better "pallavering spot than I gots right at this minute,,,,,,

 

OK,,now that we gots those issues ironed out,,,I had went ahead and ordered one of them new carbs on Ebay cause it listed the place it was gonna be shipped out of as HUMBLE, TEXAS which last time I looked is in the USA,,,right?? So I figured we was looking at a week for delivery.  NOPE,,NOT TO BE,,,!! Soon as I hit the "BUY"  button it calculated the tax and gave me the total,,which was OK but then the delivery screen comes up with a 2 week delivery date FROM CHINA!!  I contacted the seller several times right quick,,,but no response as of this morning,,,SO, I CANCELLED THE SALE last night and notified Ebay of the discreptancy,,,!!  Ebay notified me that I cannot cancel the sale til Sunday. Them AH's got to get up way earlier then that to get to ole joe,,,,,

 Gonna try all of ya'lls suggestions today.....I'm OK now,,,,sigh,,,,,

 Well,,,a bit of an update on the Miller/Onan welder project,,,,,

 I got the new carb the other day and since I had already fabbed the bottom half of the new "Adapter",,I set, measured and welded the top flange up and painted it purdy,,,, The Onan has a hand primer and after a few pumps I hit the starter switch and,,,,and,,,thet sob started up and ran like ole Shameless's shoes when he sees an auction going on,,,,,

 It does tho,,,that new carb was what the Onan was lookin for,,,,,

 The Only'ist thing I cannot figure is how the dang mechanical guvnor is susspossed to work and my friggin computor is acting up and WILL NOT resize the pics from my IPhone AGAIN,,!! The existing guvnor arm bolted right up to the new carb so,,,,?  Anyway,,when I strike an arc with the welder ,,the engine will NOT rev up just keeps loading up and will finally almost die down,,,," SOOo,,I raised the idle HANDLE to the middle position and it will weld like crazy but engine RPMs never change til I stop welding and lower the idle handle,,,I don't think  that is how it susspossed to work,,,,"

 I had just about come to that conclusion, Thad,,,,,this thing I'm thinking to be a guvnor is just a low idle, medium idle and a high idle for the particular job you wanting to do,,,

 You remember the little fuel primer pump with the small handle,,,?? That sob started to leak a little oil and that little thing is way under the carb with NO WAY to get to the 1/4" bolts,,,,,SOOOOO,,,I got to take the friggin intake/exhaust manifold off Yet again,,,,,,why didn't that sob leak yesterday,,,,,????

 I got a brother of my friend that wants this thing bout as bad as I want to sell it to him,,,,,, so I shot him a price,,,he rolled his eyes a time or two,,,said he'd think on it,,,,soooo I pull out a copy of a screenshot I'd just taken from a Miller welder forum where a dude sold one just like mine with one of the cylinders smokin ,,,,,$1,200,,,,!!  He never rolled his eyes at me no more,,,,,Said he'd bring me the money in the mornin,,,,,

OK, my 3rd son from El Paso is here and is a little guru with PC's so I asked him to help on resizing pics and he showed me an easy way long as I don't forget,,,,,,,

 Ya'll see the square box that has the little arm that has the spring attached to it,,??  That arm is constantly trying to move back and forth bout 1/4" but is controlled by the manual handle at the front of the engine,,, SO,,what is the purpose of the little arm? THe throttle rod is controlled by the lever arm (handle) at the front of engine,,,,so that little arm can go back and forth all it wants to but cannot move the throttle rod till the operator does,,,right?

 The guy lookin at it now, is gonna surprise me if it don't go ho,e with him this morning after I put a new gasket on the priming pump,,,other than that,,ot ready to go home with somebody,,,,,

 I will say this,,,I would consider a trade for a great running TO20 engine,,,,,?

  Here is a photo copy from a page in an AEAD manual.   Finally figured out this was the welder you were werking on some several years back. And it just looked a bit different than mine did.

Geez, DJ, I fails you... Run across three pages more on the governor system which includes a tractor type throttle system for setting speed... sorta like the config on your machine, I didn't have a hand throttle lever, just the solenoid that yanks the chain to speed her up to the 3000 and a switch that ye flipped for generator, auto  and  continuous run (weld) position.  

  Always thought it would have been nice to have a 'decelerator' on the engine to slow her down when shutting off instead of going into full throttle mode as it died. 

  If you want yet, I could scan those three pages too.

 Thanks for going to the trouble of finding that for me,, I followed the instructions but since I purchased a new carb the settings are not quite the same,,,,AND,,,,the dude that wants to buy it is on my azz to deliver,,,,,

 The dang gasket under the fuel pump had a small oil leak and I did not want it to leave with any issues so I pulled the manifold cause them two friggin little bitty bolts are NOT accessible AND they are 12 point and I no gotty one ,,,, WEnt to several car part stores and not one to be found so,,I gonna have to make something ,,,I DID find a 1/4" 12 point BO wrench in one of my 6 toolboxes so it ain't gonna be a BO for very long,,,,,

Ya, DJ, that pump is not in the handiest spot... did about the same thing for me too... 'cept it started doing it when I was welding, aargh.  When I seen gas on to of the engine, boy was I in a big race to shut it down.  As I recall, I worked on that little stinkn c runt down in that tight hole and got it to finally stop leaking... I s'pose if I pull it out of hibernation after 6 years, it prolly start leaking again....

 Well, got the fuel pump re-gasketed, fired it up and,,,,and,,,all is good,,! So,,I started to make a bolt-on hold down clamp for the battery and dang near cut my friggin thumb OFF on right hand,,,,!!! I was using my 4 1/2" grinder to cut some friggin angle iron,,,now get this,,,I was holding the grinder with right hand and the angle iron with LEFT hand,,,when the grinder disc hung for an instant, and flew out of my hand, I jerked away from the work and next thing I knew,,,,,the grinder was in my LEFT hand,,still running and obviously running unbalanced as half the grinder wheel was gone,,,sounded like a bunch of BEES!!!  Jamie was working on his new boat close by so I hollared for him to come quick as my RIGHT hand was bleeding some fierce!!!!  He got the grinder out of my hand, turned it off and he grabs his phone and starts to call 911 cause it was bleeding so bad,,,,,I grab a rag and try to stop the bleeding and see my right thumb is bleeding right on the knuckle and also in the meaty part of hand right under the thumb. We go inside and get warm water going on it and while it does look ugly, I have a pretty deep gash from fingernail to almost halfway around thumb,,!  Yikes,,!! The meaty part of palm also has the same gash and bleeding  like a faucet,,,,!! The bleeding finally slows down and I start putting Lots of Neosporin on the cuts and bout that time the ambulance shows up. They take a look and agree with Dr Desert that all is good but I should get a current tetnaus shot. We kiss em on da cheek and I start puttin the band-aids on when the pulsating starts gettin serious!!!! I grab a 600 Mg Gabapentin. Jamie  wants to know WHY I don't take one of my Hydros as my pain is gettin serious,,,, ON ME,,the Hydros causes great issues of CONSTIPATION,,which is a story I need to pass on later,,,,

 The Mystery on this story,,,,How,,did the grinder, that was, IN MY RIGHT HAND ,,wind up in my left hand AND still running AND with no blood on it,,,,??

WoW! Lefty desert DJ for awhile now...

 Really sucks to have them grinder discs blow up .... or even get away on ye... 

  Them grinder cuts/burns/abrasions seem to be the worst on me... they will get inflamed something fierce and hurt for a long while.  And leave their type of beauty marks on your hide. 

 Learned the hard way, it is best to clamp what i am grinding down and use both hands on the grinder. Specially when using the big skill polishing grinder with that runs about 1600 faster than the average metal grinder... and can't remember where the guard is for it...

  Heal fast...

With all the little heath troubles, make sure to keep a good eye on things for infection starting in this wound.

Now I best be extra careful I don't do just what I told you not to do. Those cut off wheels are so easy in all kinds of odd ball stuff,  like goobers up welds on old rust garbage.

  Well,,,I'm still wondering just how the friggin grinder would up in my left hand,,,,the BIG MAN is lookin out for me,,that's for sure,,, THe only'ist thing i remember is the 'BANG' when the wheel expolded, THEN looking down at my right hand cause that is where the terrible Pain was coming from,,,,, I have no recollection how the grinder went from right to left,,but Jamie was about 20 feel away and when I looked up to yell at him, he was already on the way with his phone already out and calling 911,,,he got pretty excited when he seen all the blood,,,then he got mad cause I grabbed a dirty rag to try and stop the bleeding,,,chit it was comin out everywhere,,,,!! I run inside to get it under some warm water and it did slow down enough after 5 minutes I could get some Neosporin all in the gouges. Our little Grandson seen the whole thing and he was wantin to cry the whole time,,then he run to the den and brings back a bottle of Hand Sanitizer and tells me,,,Here Grandpa,,, put this on it will kill all them germs,,,,I tells him,,I Dang sure don't want some Alkyhol on these live cuts,,,,,

 OH,,,,and I just got careless on this one as I have a vise on each work table,,,,but I DID promise ole Joe,,,we ain't gonna do that foolishness NO MORE!!

I was almost certain that she was some upset so I figured it be safer to call back next day,,,, I Distinctly remember her telling me her Grandpa having one JUST LIKE THAT ONE,,,and,,,,and,,she wanted this one because of the BBC,,,!!  Now,,,why would I talk her out of her childhood dreams if she really wants a BBC,,,???

 Gosh Dang ,,Dakota,,,,8.6 MPG,,!!  I worked my calculous several different ways and I could NOT get it to read any better,,,,whooops,,,,I couldn't keep up with one like that!!

 I never checked what this one would do for MPG,,,CHit I was scaired to,,!!

The thing IS,,,that woman texted me from The Alien Town that morning and specifically told me,, "My Grandpa had one just exactly like thet one with the BBC and I WANT THAT TRK!!" I told her I would not Hold as "first come first served",,,,her next text had tears all over it so like the cavalier person I tend to be,,,,,,cause her voice sure sounded nice,,,,,I told her I would give her 2 hours and all bets are off after that. THEN after all the palavering, she didn't even want to go for a test drive,,told her Master Mechanic Husband to take care of that little detail,,,,,I mentioned that trk had bout 1/4 tank of gas and should get her home,,,she prolly went joy riding to show it off and used up any extra there might of been,,,, That trk may yet be for sale again,,,,!!!

  Well,,Shameless,,that's kinda the way I think,,,you get a Big engine for what it can do for you and you don't quibble bout the mileage too awful much,,,,

 One of my nosy neighbors stopped by yesterday,,,said he noticed the trk was gone and started in tellin me bout a welding trk he used to have,,,,,,84 1 ton with an all metal bed, oxy/acy bottles,  tool boxes both sides and a big 300 amp Miller,,,and that BIG gas hog 454 with automatic,,,and always got,,,,,17-18 mpg,!!  I didn't want to call him a liar as I knew he'd go tell his wife,,who would be calling my wife to complain bout me picking on him again,,,,,,,,,, Instead,,I offered to buy it from him and he says,,,Chit,,I sold that trk 20 years ago,,,,,,figures,

I had a C60 single axle dump truck for a couple of years. 366 with a big ole ugly Holley on it. Wouldn't pull a hill loaded for chit. Could run all day on 50 gals gas. Saw the 4bbl linkage was jacked up, fixed that and could pull the hills in 4 hi loaded with 10 tons gravel.

Would also go through 45 gals gas in 4 1/2 hrs. Had to save the extra 5 to get to the gas station. That's when gas was a dollar a gallon and 55 mph speed limit. Sold it when prices started going nuts. Same price to have it hauled so let them do it.
