I've got some abnormal wear on my distributer gear to the point it looks like its about to strip a tooth or two.
The teeth on one side are worn very much while the ones on the other show much less wear.
My first inclination was to simply replace the gear with another good one I have.
However, I am now wondering what caused the "one-sided" wear.
Maybe a slightly bent distributer shaft?
There is no movement in the shaft so I assume the bushing is good.
I think I will attempt to set up a dial indicator to check for runout on the shaft before I stick another gear on there and run it.
Anybody else have a similar problem with a distributer gear.

WOW! Yeah, unless you can convince yourself that the gear was that badly out of true when it was hobbed - then a bent shaft it is.

Be curious to know how fat out that puppy is.

What` the drive gear in the gov. housing look like? If your lucky the dist gear was the softer one.

Bent shaft, worn bushings or bearings, worn drive gear, other worn bearings or worn cam bearings or the dist gear just wasn't made right or of the right materials to begin with.   Have seen lots of gears that just were made of bad materials then the next batch of gears worked fine.

Actually, I've seen em' worst than that. But, you're right in your assumption. Its on its way out the door. If you decide to rebuild the Distributor, renew the drive gear or do a good inspection of drive gear condition and check trueness of the drive's main shaft. Ole Shovel made a good point of soft and hardened Distributor gears. Materials used to made em' has a lot to do with certain wear patterns...

I've been away for a day, so, if I get a chance today,  I'm thinking I had better take a good look at the drive gear as well!!
Thanx for the replies.

I checked the shaft with a dial indicator; less than .001"  runout. No discernible "play" in shaft/bushing at the gear end. There is .003" of movement of the shaft at the rotor end.
I looked at the drive gear and cannot see any serious wear on it. Must be harder?
Anyway, I installed a good used gear from another dist. and put it back together.
I intend to  pull the dist. and check the "new" gear periodically to monitor it for wear.
