Used for moving prisoners from one site to another ??

More or less, it was used to move a bunch of drunks from one bar to the next. Certainly safer than letting them drive individually, although, I'm not to sure how safe that thing is.

Looks like somebody did a good job.. plenty of labor and planning went into that... Not really "NEW" so it has held up well for quite some time !!

1972 or 1973. I am doing a frame off on a 1972 IH pickup my dad bought new. Now I have 8 trucks to make one good one. That's how the Allis thing started. I bought my dad's WD he bought new and now I have 30 that run and 30 in parts. I am not done yet. I have my Grand fathers 8N Ford he bought new. To be continued.

Remember- IH at this time did medium and heavy duty chassis. they made large volumes of busses for all sorts of markets, including hotel shuttles, large group taxis, etc., and sold them in large volumes overseas.  In third-world, they were common in four-wheel-drive   This one might be a home conversion, it could be a custom coach, it could've been factory.

The picture we'd all like to see, is the chassis under the body.  I'm certain it's stout- that's a long span between axles.   The roof rack is awesome!

With the big luggage rack also it could have been built by a company that did "airport cars" back when those were a thing.

Not just the size of the frame on the bottom.. They could have reinforced the roof.. and th addition of the rack on top stabalizes the roof... and the door post between the floor and the roof turn the entire  truck into a BOX BEAM design..

Think of a  mini van or similar.. NO FRAME to speak of... Its a BOX.

That would have been safer for those 25 farm workers piled into the explorer in California that pulled out in front of the that loaded tractor trailer Thumbs Up

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Back in the 1970's - 80's I remember seeing vehicles like that used to shuttle Philips Petroleum folks between Bartlesville and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Don't remember the brand though.

5 doors... 3 people per seat = 15 people at 220 pound each is only 3300 pounds... Any  one ton truck would handle that. ... So its not the LOAD , its getting adequate strength in the body design........ but probably turns like a school bus !

I road in a similar car in 1972 when I arrived at Champaign/Urbana heading to Chanute AFB IL.   I don't recall the make but it was very similar, and it had the roof rack.  It seemed the front end changed lanes before the rear end did.  It was just like a pickup back then as it didn't have any carpet either.

When I got back to the States om May of 1970, I saw a similar but shorter one at the airport, I didn't know IHC had changed the design since I left the country in 1968.  I think I like the late 1960s bodies better.  To each their own.
