I'm really sorry for the off color equipment here, but there are so many cool elements to this pic I couldn't help but post it. I couldn't imagine moving equipment around like
this!

It's 1938 or earlier judging by the vehicles and unstyled JD GP.

What so many of these period pictures show is the "minimalist" (for lack of a better word) approach to getting things done.

Today, you do that - and 2-3 patrol cars would be pulling up to ticket you - like sharks in a salmon tank.

I know it'd be just plain crazy to let your kids ride around in the back of an open pick-up truck, or (God forbid) let them ride bikes without a helmet - but we all did just that - and enough survived that barbarism to talk about it as adults.

Makes you wonder - was this equipment just purchased - or being moved to a field "down the road a-piece" to do some work?

Welp, we'll never know. What I do know, is the best part of the day could be spent moving equipment, then work it into the night, all the while satisfied knowing a lot of time was saved over the way the "old folks" used to do it.

Neat old photo. They were getting 'er done. Check out the brick street - don't see many of those any more.

You know, one time I was towing a 60 all crop.  Police stopped me and asked "how wide are you son"?  I quickly responded " little over 8 feet".  Policeman put the tape on it and came back smiling "How about 12 foot 6 inches"!
He was neat and told me to keep on but stay out of Towson, MD - our metropolis.
Funny how I remember doing almost just what I see in the picture.  If you stayed off the main roads you were OK.
Good Luck!

Purdue university is near here, and a friend that hauls farm machinery was hauling a combine on a lowboy one day somewhat near the time a purdue football game was going on.  Some smart city slicker cop pulled him over and made him go to a parking lot, and said he had to park it until a couple of hours after the game was over.  He replied "roger that" and started unstrapping the combine with duals and all.  Well the cop was suprised and asked what the hell he was doing?  Indiana has very specific laws about farm machinery and what they can do(practically any thing they want to except go down the interstate.) and the driver informed the police officer of this and told him that if he couldn't drive the truck, he would drive the combine through town in busy game day traffic.

The policeman frantically called his superiors over the radio asking what to do?  Someone there more experienced with farm machinery promptly told him he better apologize for being an idiot/ahole, help the driver get his truck going again, and politely offer to escort him out of town, which he promptly did.

One thing I loved, was in the military, pulling grossly overweight on state scales, gets them DOT officers all in a tissy on just what to do!
