Governor broke on my hand crank B.  Assume this is the case since engine took off at high RPMs and something broke out a quarter-sized chunk of metal from the governor housing.  I also assume I need to buy a replacement.  Is there a difference between the governor for a hand crank and the governor for an electric start?  Is there any chance a broken piece could have made its way down into the crankcase?  Wondering if there is a need to open the engine to be sure it's clear.

Thanks

I think there is a good chance that a stray piece could have dropped into the front timing cover area.  I have a  WC parts tractor that the governor broke and a piece dropped down and took a couple of teeth off of the crank gear and broke the camshaft gear. I think it would be a good idea to have a look!!

Ah yes, the forum just had this discussion - Dick L gave a very good post-mortem on the situation.

NO.

Is there any chance a broken piece could have made its way down into the crankcase?

YES. But that wouldn't be a problem - it'd just sit on the bottom of the oil pan, slowly becoming a fossil - oilpannicus junkosaur.

Wondering if there is a need to open the engine to be sure it's clear.

YES. Front timing cover anyways. If you cannot recover all those pieces - then having one bouncing around endlessly in the timing gear area IS a problem. Besides, aren't you getting tired of that front crank seal leaking?
It was very short-sighted on Allis Chalmers part to not design that governor to last 60 years - unconscionable...
