I replaced the pto in my 7050, new races and bearings internally. I didn't replace the metal shims between the cover and the tractor. Was I supposed too, and if so why? Thanks guys!

99% of the time, the original shim stack will be alright. Bearings shouldn't have had any endplay and not been preloaded to any serious extent.

Thanks Doc! Forgive my ignorance here as this is the first time I've done one of these and I'm by no means a mechanic. Once I get the cover thght and there isn't any play foreword or backward I assume that the shims are good?

They could be too tight !!! Slowly snug up the bolts knowing there is endplay and watch the endplay disappear. A vice grips on the PTO shaft should be easily able to turn the shaft, allowing for the drag of the clutch discs up above. That's the part that is hard to explain. It will take at least one full revolution of the PTO shaft to seat the rollers in the bearings to determine if it is too tight or not.

I have the bolts snug and I can turn the pto by hand. There is no horizontal play in the pto.

So, then you are maybe good. Finish tightening the bolts and turn the shaft at least one full revolution.
