I need to paint some rims, both AC and other brands, silver color.  Anyone have a good paint brand to use that holds up well?

I use Ford Argent Silver. I think it is very close to the original rim color. I'm sure there are other options that are good, too.

Rustoleum Hammered Aluminum is what I have used. Levels out well when applied with a brush and is quite hard when dry.

John,
I would agree with Greg. I like the rustoleum products. I use rattle cans.
We need pictures too!

 Chris

I have used Allis grey primer and /or rustoleum paint.....both are easy to match later..If it needs to be shiny...use an aluminum paint over as suggested....

I painted the rims on the 1955 WD45 back in 1976 when I first got it. Rustoleum primer and then their silver paint. They still look OK, but they rotted out from the inside out. Replaced them about a month ago with new rims. I hope these last another 70 years. Oh well kid probably won't be able to buy gasoline in 70 Years.

Thanks for all the great advice guys!  The project right now is a Ford 6000 that had a bad tire and the wheel was loose on the axle, and the wheel seal was leaking.  Decided I shoud fix it all at the same time.  Of course the wheel seal is somewhat difficult to find, although I haven't called New Holland yet.  CR still makes them but none in stock nearby, $68!

I think the best way is to get it powder coated and not very expensive. But you have to disassemble so a bit of extra work.

Dem-Kote spray can paint makes a great Aluminum(silver) paint. Apply it in very thin coats from a 12-18” distance. It’s nozzles allowed 360 degree movement allowing horizontal side to side to vertical up & down spray patterns.

I should have said that all my rear rims are now powder coated. Have a real good local place. Still use the CaseIH silver. The raddle can paint job I talked about above was cream and silver front rims.

This wheel was pretty heavily rusted on the inside and needed some cutting and welding around the valve stem. After the repair I had it galvanized at a local shop . I'm pretty happy with the result, the chemical process removed the rest of the rust and restored the factory finish.

That’s real nice. I believe they were galvanized from factory.

Had mine sandblasted and powder-coated.
Immediately after sandblasting, I took them to the powder-coating place.

I don't recall the exact color; it was some silver that the fellas at the powder-coating place had a "chip" of.  The powder coat cost was very reasonable at $80 for both rims.

Great work guys. I’ll have to inquire locally about powder coating. Your $80/rim seems reasonable. Thanks for sharing,

The shop in Edmonton is Daam Galvanizing, their minimum charge is $90 for 100 LBS, so 2 rear wheels from the WD45  are pretty close to that . As rusty as mine were I figured I would need to sandblast prior to paint , in order to galvanize I wire wheeled the heaviest rust off, then the chemical treatment took care of the rest.

Good looking rims and tractor! John and all of us are getting some good rim options. The take it all apart, repair and sandblast is the best starting point for the coatings. I like the powder coat look on the D17, more of a argent color.

 Chris
