Hey again, everyone!
I'm assuming a new specific post for each problem is best, when they're different days.. But someone let me know if it's preferred to just ask all questions on one post - I just assume it wouldn't get the same attention.

I've got a couple of hanging wires and .. something else .. hanging on my 1968 190XT with the G-2800 engine.
The wires are coming from the same bundle as the wires that lead to the alternator, although I know this doesn't necessarily mean they go there also. I certainly don't see a place for them to go.
One is a wire with a rubber boot elbow. The other is just a hanging yellow wire.

The .. other thing .. hanging confuses me. I don't think it's a wire. More like a very small air line or something. Here's 3 pictures showing it, where it comes from (hidden under the hood though) and where it connects - which is seemingly where it broke, assuming I'm connecting the right dots.

Any thoughts on what any of these are?
Thanks in advance!

IMO, the "small" wires hanging behind the alternator "USED" to go to the original. Does your tachometer work?? The "big" cable laying on top of the hydraulic pump looks like the tach drive cable ?? The plastic "tube" might be for the air filter restriction "bulb" on the dash ??

@FREEDGUY
Noted on the possibility of being old wires!
Yes Sir, the tachometer does work.
Oooh.. Is that what that "bulb" is on my dash.. I was wondering about that. No idea what it does. :D

Also, for anyone, do you know if for an engine oil change... Does it take 8 quarts or 12 quarts? The operator manual says 8. Tractordata says 12.

The clear vacuum line goes from the air filter indicator which is black and mounted in the dash. It’s not a bulb, there is a colored flag that will become visible to warn you that you need to clean the air filter. The other end goes to the air filter intake tube.

@AC720Man
Thank you for that! You're awesome.

Anyone that might have an answer to the engine oil capacity for an oil change, hoping that someone knows so I can do it tomorrow.

What is your entire serial number? It’s located on the bell housing on the left side of the tractor. I’m suspecting an engine has been changed from a diesel to a gas which uses a different wiring harness.
My factory operator manual says 11 quarts with a filter change.

190 20519 XT.

I have wondered about a possible engine swap.. But I don't know. I do have a block heater.. Which I thought was weird when the previous owner mentioned that. Serial number isn't diesel though..

Poor choice of words on my part, sorry for the confusion. Seems like the "indicator" is below the steering column ?

Always be on the safe side. Put in 8 with a new filter, check the level. It most likely wont even be touching the dip stick. Add another quart and repeat the process. I feel certain you will wind up putting 11 quarts in. At least this way you wont put too much in it. Always check the level after you have run the engine for a few minutes.

Well I was wrong, there isn’t a D at the end XT which would have indicated the tractor came from the factory with a Diesel engine.
Can you clean the oil off the wiring to see the color code of each wire?

@FREEDGUY
Yes Sir, that's where mine is - now that I know what it is. :D
Haha, thanks!

@AC720Man
Yes Sir, I was figuring that as a worst-case scenario. The oil has read low since I got it, so I added two quarts tonight and it didn't change the level (oddly). I'm used to tearing apart vehicles, so maybe that's why it's odd to me.. But I'd think it should register relatively immediately even with the engine off.
After I ran it for a bit the level read perfectly, but I also realize you're supposed to check it without it running or after a certain time of turning off, etc.

If there's not harm in it, I'll add 8, check, and then go quart by quart. But would it harm the engine being potentially 4 quarts low and running, even if only at an idle?

The plug on the alternator should have 2 wires going to it, The wire with the connector looks li the temperature sensor.

Sorry, just now noticing your last post. I'll get the oil cleaned up and see what is what before long.

@DSeries4
Haha, yes!
Although, interestingly enough... My shop manual says...

"Crankcase Oil, Quarts ... 8-12** ... **Approximate Capacity ."

So, yeah.. Lots of help from the shop manual. Lol.

@Joe(TX)
Ahhh, good catch! I see what you mean. I'll look at it closer tomorrow along with a couple of other things.
...I knew I should have gotten that pigtail electrical tool set for free when I had the opportunity! Ha!

The wire with the elbow goes to the alternator also and there should be another wire also going to your temp sending unit. Not sure what the wire on alternator does, maybe goes to the regulator??? Need to see a wiring diagram for the tractor.

The wire with the elbow does not go to the regulator. It looks like the temp sensor to me.

You need to get an owners manual which has the wiring diagram. I cannot find mind right now to look up the wire colors,

Hanging wire is for a ground on the alternator that either doesn't have a stud on the backside for it to connect to, or the wire simply isn't slipped onto the ground stud. This wire should be black. The water temp wire is longer so it can reach up higher to its sender.

Hey everyone!
Just wanted to update and thank everyone!

According to the wiring diagram;
-The black wire with the elbow that is hanging is, as DrAllis said, the ground wire. For mine, there is a ground stud on the back of the alternator that isn't attached to anything currently.
-The orange wire goes from the charge side of the ammeter to the battery terminal of alternator.
-Light green wire from field terminal of alternator to field terminal of voltage regulator.
Interestingly enough, the other side of that wiring connector is labeled "R" (instead of "F"), and is unused - even in the wiring diagram.
-Yellow wire is... Unknown... My wiring diagram doesn't even acknowledge a yellow wire exists on this tractor.. So perhaps someone ran some new wires and this one was unneeded. The world may never know, because I hate tracing hidden wires.

Also, on the oil... I did a complete change, including a new filter, and it took 8 quarts to fill up nicely. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure I don't need to top it off later, but so far even after running a couple hours it is good.

Thanks again for all the help!

I would unwrap the harness a few inches so you can see if the wires colors have faded. I have found wires that appeared to be white when they were actually another color.

Does your diagram show a wire going to the temp sender above the alternator? Or do you have a wire attached to it? It looks like it may be the light tan wire going up there from your pic.

Can someone verify that it's a tach drive cable laying across his hydraulic pump ? The OP says his tach works though Confused ? Thanks

@Joe(TX)
Noted, Sir! I will definitely use that, as that's a smart idea.

@DanWi
I'll look at the diagram later and let you know. About to head into town, so hopefully later tonight.

@FREEDGUY
Ummm.. I'll try to look into it! Lol, I may be the wrong person. Tachometer definitely moves though.

Yellow wire should go to temp sending unit in thermostat housing. Someone may have run a new wire to it or even replaced the heat gauge with a mechanical unit.

@DanWi
Perhaps this is my ignorance speaking.. But I don't see anything about it on the diagram?

@Lynn Marshall
Thanks! I'll have to look more at it tomorrow to try and verify.

@Anyone.. On this diagram, the fuel gauge and wire 23 don't connect, correct? They just cross each other on the paper, right? Perhaps I am reading the diagram wrong, but I thought it did not mean they connect.. Yet in the manual itself it says the fuel sending unit is on the same fuse as the lights.. Which is good news, since I just got my lights working today with a new fuse! I'll check it tomorrow to see if the gauge works now, although I'm not expecting that to be the problem.

Try looking on the diesel wiring diagram or a later model, that diagram isn't showing a temp gauge.

If you can find a service manual for your 190, it has a little more detailed explanation of where each wire goes, (from "x" to "y") for instance, along with the color of each wire.  it has this for gas and diesel tractors in it.

@JC(WI)
Thank you very much for that! That's certainly not the wiring diagram in my manual that came with the tractor, but I guess that makes sense if this is an older-style 190XT manual!
Thank you!

Fantrum, I was able to get the operator, parts, and service manual very inexpensively in PDF format online. They are searchable too, I like the Control F. If you are interested I can send you the site in a message. Not sure how this forum is with posting links.

@redleg
Thank you very much for that offer! I think this forum is pretty open to posting resources, as I've seen a lot of that. I know Jensales (might not be spelled correctly) has the manuals, they're actually the only place I've found a parts manual online. I have an operator's manual, but it's apparently for the Series I (just guessing) because there are definitely differences and someone provided a different wiring diagram from a later manual.. So finding a manual specific to my Series II would be amazing, but I haven't seen any online manuals specifying series except "valid for Series III".
The shop manual I have is nice, but it doesn't talk about many of the things I'm looking into... Like the parking brake. No mention. No help.

So, "too long, didn't read"... Yes, I'd love your additional resources. Ha! I seem to have a hard time finding the right resources, despite looking pretty intensively.

I'll message you. Thanks!
