A few years back I bought a hanging shop heater. I saw it in use and know it was working . Then one day it started putting out black soot . We removed it during a remodel and they replaced it. What we learned was that the stove pipe had broken off flush with the side of the building. I’m thinking the wind blowing backwards through the exhaust caused the soot. It only did it at times. Not sure what to call this heater? Not infared type but Like a hanging furnace. Do you think this is a mistake? Can I run it off of a 100 lb lLP tank? |

I'd call it a hanging gas furnace... now assuming it's natural gas, it _might_ be possible to 'rejet' it for propane. You'd have to get the complete make/model/version information and contact 'someone'. Your HVAC installer would be first choice( I assume you need a licensed installer......). You can use Google to search 'make-model - propane conversion' as see what comes up.... Now a lot depends on the age and condition of the unit. 'contractor' got a GREAT deal on a 2post car lift until he found out $500 worth of rollers are history AND the motor starter board is,well,busted....oopsy... and he 'knows-it-all'..... it could end up being a coin toss, depending on cost of propane conversion and install. ------------- 3 D-14s,A-C forklift, B-112 Kubota BX23S lil' TOOT( The Other Orange Tractor) Never burn your bridges, unless you can walk on water |

We called them Unit Heaters. I have also seen what was called horizontal furnaces hung from ceilings. ------------- 917 H, '48 G, '65 D-10 series III "Allis Express" |

It was already running on LP. It looks clean on the inside. Not very big but was heating more Sq ft than my shop. |

It depends on the BTU input / output of the unit heater , a 100# propane has a draw limit for gas removal and for how much propane will FREEZE id that rate is exceeded . as Coke said, it may run on a 100% bottle depending on how long the furnace runs andwhat the ambient temp of the bottle is. Keeping the bottle somewhat warmer than outside could help . ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Friend down the street just got a 250 tank from the gas company and they just come out and fill as needed. ------------- D14, D17, 5020, 612H, CASE 446 |

I have an 80,000 but unit heater hanging in the corner of my shop its hooked to a 250 gal propane tank I fill it twice a year. I filled in December and will need fuel again in spring . It can be run from a 100 lb tank. I'm pretty sure we have a lot more cold in ND than you do in AR. They should be put in a corner pointing to the opposite corner. If pointed straight across a building you'll have a warm strip and cold strips on both sides. Mine needed to be converted from Natural gas to propane it came with all the jets in the box. I swapped them out and the gas man set the pressure whe he delivered the tank and hooked it up.

Good to know. I do have it pointing to the opposite corner. I’d be quite fortunate to get 5 or ten winter days in the shop a year. Most today’s Arkansas winter is tolerable in there. I’m tired of tolerable and leaning towards comfortable. |

Seeing as it already has the LP jets, that's a big help. That process CAN get expensive. OK, you bypassed that...Now, We used to heat with two 100 LB. cylinders and never had them freeze up. I'd check around to see IF and how much it would be to have them filled. You'd have to have a special regulator, one that auto swaps from side to side if you're going to use two tanks. Been a long time since I've seen the price on them, but again, they can get expensive. You've got to weigh the initial expense against what a 250 tank would cost you. We have to 'rent' ours here. They give you the tank and charge a stipend for its rental. IF you don't use enough gas, they charge extra cause you didn't use enough gas. I looked at the cost of my own tanks and regulator and then the trouble of hauling the tanks to a place that would fill them,, against them coming when I call to fill the 250. Found that I put in an LP cook stove and that takes care of not using enough gas, so I don't get charged extra anymore. It was just cheaper for me to go that way. ------------- "Allis-Express" 19?? I will someday buy a 250 or 500 gallon tank. Our house runs off LP so I think I use enough gas and they would just fill the shop when they’re here. Did the tank rental for years but then they started adding .50 a gallon plus tank rental. |

I am a buy the tank and shop for the better price on gas guy. But I have seen guys rent a tank and change companies and tanks. But I have got behind 2 summers ago  the pop off valve failed. Not so much the gas lost,  but $500 for all new hardware( including labor) on all the ports. So I am at $1000 for purchase and repair in 40 years time, so maybe not so bad.But have known frugal people that did not want the liability of owning a tank.

Thad- if you're already heating the house with propane, why not just Tee the medium pressure line out in the yard, run it to the corner of the shop, install a 11" w.c. second stage reg, pipe that inside, to the heater, and call it good? IF you're gonna be in for a tank, just acquire a larger tank for the HOUSE, so you can do a bulk fill on just that one tank, as it'll reduce hassle, and put it on your contract or bulk-buy rate. ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest. |
