My father has recently become rather nostalgic about the AllisChalmers tractor that he used to help grandpa on the farm in northern MI. I am trying to figure out what model the tractor is by the description that he has given me and then find one that I can photograph and mat for a Christmas present for him. Dad used the tractor on the farm in the late 40's / early 50's and remembers that grandpa bought it used. The details he can remember are: wide front tires iron seat 4 forward gears PTO Any help in identifying this and even possibly where I could locate one in the Wisconsin area would be most appreciated! do you mean wide front end?
It sounds to me like you are talking about a WC.
If it is a WC it could be styled or unstyled.
Unstyled
 styled
 Or in rare cases it could be a wide front.
Unstyled
 Styled
 or a WF unstyled
 Styled

What part of Northern Michigan? That may help a bit...maybe find the dealer that was or is up here. Allis put a lot of tractors up on here so with those & possible location you may get more info that you expected. ------------- Life is short...Make haste to be kind |

| why not get the swinford history of allis tractors and have him pick the tractor out of the photos, then find the real one for a pic. in his memory, even if it is the wrong tractor, the photo won't lie, it will be the one. js |

If it had a wide front and an iron seat, a U would fit the description. The iron seat disqualifies the B, and the wide fron almost disqualifies the WC, could be a WF but unlikely. ------------- Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives. |

Thanks for the help so far guys. The farm was in Onaway, MI, not far from Oscoda and Alpena. If you have any sources for locating dealers other than Google (which I will be trying here shortly) I would appreciate the lead. As far as having him pick out the model from a book, the idea is to surprise him with the pictures, so I have to do this the hard way. Thanks for the idea though. And I will probably look up the book to quench my own curiosity. |

Ask him if it had a starter, or if they had to hand crank it. That may help a little. Late 40s and would rule out a CA. Ask if it had sharp corners on the fenders(like the A,U,Es).
Flat floor board? Would rule out WC,WD. Tall or short. Rounded curvy gas tank or squared off like unstyled WC or U,A, etc. Big thick wide bellhousing or not. Big flat radiator with rounded top tank? Flat fan belt or V-belt? All that might help narrow it down.

The Dealer for the Onaway area at that time would have been Ormsbee Implement in Afton, MI Still in business today as an AGCO dealer.
