Correct me if I'm wrong, but would putting smaller wheels on a vehicle (specifically the driven wheels) increase the torque capability? Basically the engine has to put out more work to achieve the same distance, therefore it's moving with more power. ------------- 1957 D17 Diesel w/ M&W Pistons |

You can use the DIAMETER to figure it out.... 10% smaller = 10% less speed = 10% more torque. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

| Exactly, like the old Brit Mini's they had a 3 cylinder engine, TINY as in 1. something litre, they used 13" wheels and TINY Tires but the torque curve for the tiny engines was similar to the old two stroke motorcycles, on the pipe was around 4-6grand and they made economy as not working for HP so hard. |

traction depends on what your trying to pull. If your load is close to or more than the tractor / truck itself, then possible... If you are in LOW gear and your already slipping, it will not do any good to have smaller tires... If you in HIGH gear at running at 1800 RPM and you put smaller tires and up the speed to 2000 RPM, then you get more torque and HP......... same as changing gear ratios in a truck from 3.55 to 4.10 ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

I don't think Mini's ever had a 3 cylinder engine in them, they were always inline 4's, even the 850 base model was a 4 inline. ------------- 1957 D17 Diesel w/ M&W Pistons |

Not to "nit pic', but original Mini wheels were only 10 in. I've had lots of them. The one that was the most fun was a '67 Mini Cooper "S" that was highly modified. That engine was crankin' out over 130 HP! Would do well over 100 mph and lay rubber in every gear including 4th. Only thing was, those little wheels couldn't get enough air flow over the disc brakes to cool them properly. Serious brake fade on quick stops from high speed. My first wife hated that car!! Wish I still had it! There is another one coming in the shop for rebuild in the next couple of days.

No worries, I think the new Maxi-Mini might actually have a 3-cylinder in it. Only reason I know is BMC had the A-series and the B-series engines, which were both 4 cylinder, and pretty closely related, my dad's old Wolseley had a B-series motor in it. It's kind of like Chevy with the small block and the big block. Funnily, I'm just reading Nissan licensed the designs, and used them as the basis for their engines, weird to think of the impact that will have had. ------------- 1957 D17 Diesel w/ M&W Pistons |
