Fred, I have a brochure for a 175KW diesel electric set that lists a 17000 engine.
It is a 844 cu.in. turbocharged rated at 275 hp.  Crankcase holds 23 quarts. Does it have an A-C generator ?  Looks to be a little earlier engine with the shaft drive injection pump.
The brochure has the same open shaft and is dated 1971. The 16000 was a non turbo version. The 21000 is the same 844 but they cranked up to 450 hp out it in highway trucks
