An AGCO kit is 4 inch bore and 8.0 to 1 compression ratio....all after market 4 1/8" bore are less compression.

I would rather have the D-17 overbore than a little higher compression. A D-17 with an overbore puts more power than a stock 170.

Call Bill, Brenda, or Betty at Sandy Lake Imp. I would go with the 170 kit. The aftermarket over bore kits give a WD45 compression ratio so I'm told.

Some facts.....a 170 would actually produce about 4 to 5 more HP if you removed the live hydraulic pump and installed an old D17 belly pump. The D17 IV was never Nebraska tested and in reality would only produce about 48 or 49 HP compared to an old 1957 D17 that was tested at 53 HP. M&W made an overbore 4 1/8" (no longer available kit SP48) that was 7.5 to 1 compression( made 57 HP) vs a std D17 that was 7.25 to 1 compression and 4 inch bore (53 hp). You will not be disappointed with a 170 kit in a D17.....you will be disappointed with any aftermarket overbore kit if it isn't at least the same compression (7.25 to 1) as a D17 and I don't think there are ANY out there that are. I believe them to be 6.5 to 1 or thereabouts.

I remember having this discussion some years ago. I'd go with the 170 kit. The higher compression will get you more than the 1/8" overbore but I couldn't convince a few here back then.

Kit could be used in a WD45 ( won't be able to start it without 12 volts and will stress the crankshaft for hard farming use) and a 170 camshaft grind is the SAME as a D17.....175 cam had a different grind for more valve lift.

Well how much higher does it put the comp ration on a WD 45 then? Meaning, is it well beyond 87-93 octane will do to prevent knocking?

Compression ratio on WD45 is 6.5 to 1..........D17 is 7.25 to 1......170 is 8.0 to 1......all run on regular gas and the D17 and 170 are timed at 25 degrees BTDC at full throttle where the WD45 is 30 degrees BTDC. I'd run 89 octane if it was mine, but no need for any better than that.

The specs say the Gleaner E engine with Z code had 8.1 comp ratio.
But if I read between the lines correctly, the easiest way to get max HP using stock AC parts - is to drop a 175 gas engine into a WD 45. Sound about right?

I put a 175 kit (8.25:1) in brother's D17 back about a dozen years ago. Worked great. At D17 rpm of 1650 it dynoed at 56 HP before a complete break in period. Never had it on a dyno since cause he after a year or so dropped in a hopped up E engine to satisfy his pulling fever. Thing is after he did that he never pulled it for lack of time but before with the 175 kit he trophied all the time. That was a fun project, we just made our own jig to weld H Farmall top half of connecting rods to the bottom end of the D17 connecting rods. Made the jig by eyeball work only. Then attached Chevy 350 4" bore pistons to them. Compression was so high that on pump gas when you'd shut off the key switch it would make no difference as the engine would run and sound like it did with the switch on. Brother then got nervous and pulled the coil wire which did nothing. Had to shut off the gas. Bought airplane fuel and that did the trick. That thing really cackled loud with the 3" straight pipe he put on. Only cost were a gasket kit, used connecting rods and new 350 pistons. We just reused the old bearing as they looked good. Still has the engine on the shelf and we just talked about dropping it in a WD and to actually see how long it holds together if we go pulling it. OK I veered of a little.

Almost...8 to 1 on all 170's and 8.25 to 1 on the 175's.....the 8.25 to 1 compression caused the ignition timing to be set back to 23 degrees BTDC versus 25 degrees BTDC due to detonation issues.
