I have 2 portable lp tanks that are the size you used see on the front hitch of travel trailers. When toTractor Supply to refill, clerk claimed one was to old, the other the gasket was bad. Are these repairable?
Bought these at an auction for $10.00 each.

WE go to the local Farm Service center.. They will check the tank, put on a NEW STYLE valve and then refill... assuming the tank is not damaged.

Maybe part is the state you live in, but its been over 10 years since they wanted a newer type valve on tanks, here in the Land of Fruits and Nuts. Some of smaller propane places would refill if they knew you. Last year one place put a new type valve on 7 or 10 gal tank my son had been using. Was about the same price as a new tank.
More simple things the blood sucking lawyers have got screwed up. Need to be a certified expert to screw a valve or pipe together. Because if you sold it your responsible for for how the buyer uses it, just crazy.

Tanks are not damaged, looks like the newer style valves, the same as what’s on my grill tank now. Maybe the next time my grill tank runs empty, I will swap the valve, and exchange tanks at the gas station, those flunky clerks there will never know.

Local LP sales shop will replace valves but tanks have to be inside a Hydro Test date(Stamped on tanks) or will sell a new one and scrap old one. They drill several holes in them so cannot be reused.

take them to Lowe's or someone that don't refill and do the tank exchange

Go to some place one rainy night that has the Blue Rino exchange tanks. The girl that has to come out in the rain won't look twice at the valves or the date code and it will be cheaper in the long run that having the valves replaced and the tanks recertified. Blue rino will do all of the valve replacement and testing before they refill them. They also clean and repaint any tank with the least bit of rust on it. Then you can refill it anywhere until the test date expires.

These 2 are the larger tanks, about twice the height as the ‘tank exchange’ size.

Call the lp supplier in your area, ask who recertifies their tanks for them. If yours are not all rusty and dented you should be able to get them useable . It used to depend on the size of the tank concerning the OP valve.

I did the same as you, picked up a cheap partly full tank, then used up the gas. After that I cleaned up the tank and put on a fresh white paint job, let it cure for a couple weeks then added some barn dirt and took them to a propane place, the guy changed the valve and put a visual inspection sticker on, refilled it and good to go.

I've had my RV tanks reverted at the local propane dealer just drop off one day come back the next there Certs for 12 more years and full I think the one I did last year was only $5 more than just a fill. If it fails the hydro test you won't get it back if it's clean and undamaged it will pass unless someone left the valve open on a empty tank forever then it'll be rusty inside and automaticly fail.
