did allis ever have a flat head engine with the distributor on the top of the head. local ag school has one like that and is looking to get rid of it and he thinks it might be an allis, or is it something else?

Thanks, Carl

Waukesha engines used in early Allis were flat head. Herculese made many small flat head engines. Also Jeeps used that small (though when you pulled one its roots seemed to be in China, it was a long stroke and so tall engine) flat head at least through 1949.

I have a Continental Engine history book from 30 or 40 years ago. They made many engine designs, practically "you want it, we'll make it" from small engines like one smaller than the Allis G engine up to aircraft and tank engines that shared parts, though those made for tank engines weren't flight certified even though mechanically they interchanged between the big radial engines.

Continental made 1 cyl air cooled engines for things like lawn mowers too. I have a few of those. I've also seen them in David Bradley walk behind garden tractors.

Friend has a 6 cylinder flat head A-C industrial engine. I finally found it in some Buda information that I have. I don't know where the distributer is.
