Moved to new place about 5 years ago. Never had a need to use this hydrant until now, and found it stuck shut. Handle won't budge. No telling how long it has sat there unused. Perhaps 15 years? Any hope of getting this to work without digging it up and replacing it?  |

May be least amount of work to just replace it. there is a packing nut at the top around the stem... loosen it WAY UP and put some PENETRATING oil on the inside on the packing and the pivot for the handle... then see if that helps... if not, time to replace all.

turn water off , with 2 pipe wrenches unscrew top from drop pipe - should come apart , then figure out the problem . Was frozen at the head. Tried to back out packing nut, wouldn't budge, so hit it and the rod with some Free All. Gave it a bit, was ready to go at packing nut again with a wrench, but tried the handle again first, and was happy to see the rod let go and water started flowing. Rust and some crud came out too, but it's working normal now. These things are pretty simple once you know how they work. Now that it's working, that allowed me to take one 100' hose out of the run. That, plus going from house hydrant to yard hydrant, got double the pressure and volume in the bargain. About like going from a BB gun to a .22. Heck of a difference!
