I'm trying to remember from way back that a WD battery box use to have some kind of insulating cardboard/fiberboard material in the bottom of the metal box to set the battery on. I thought this was to help protect the battery (insulate it). Does that sound correct? If so, I was just going to use an old shingle to place in the bottom of my WD. Should the bottom of the shingle face down in the box or should the rough or top side be face down in the box? Many thanks in advance.

I don't remember that, I thought they had one on top with 3holes for the battery caps, Just what my memory tells me.

My one battery box has one on the top... Not sure of the material but some sort of wooden fiber?

Those insulators are made of Masonite board. I have some NOS ones. The upper one did have three hose and the bottom one was solid.

I had an original top made from masonite/hardboard--I was very careful to layout the three holes based on the original. When I put it over the new battery--holes and battery caps didn't line up! May want to double check on newer batteries. I do remember there was a tar-like membrane in the bottom of the box. R. Musgrave

My 1950 WD father got new had a piece of masonite/hardboard under the battery and one on top.

The originals were a type of fiber board. Masonite will work fine, I have also used 1/4 inch plywood. The granules on roofing shingles will create too much abrasion and possibly cause problems.

I used 1/4 inch under-lament hard board for my WC. just to keep the top posts from jumping up and shorting out on the top.

Wouldn't a plastic truck mud flap work? Should last for years. Leon

I use rubber mud flaps for trailers. Trim them down to size and lay them in the bottom of the Battery box. Sorta' insulates the Battery from vibration as well as protecting the bottom of the box. They work great. Have em' in all of my Tractor boxes.....

I just got me one of these to put in the bottom of my under mount toolbox on the truck. The only reason I ordered it was the dimensions were perfect for the box and it was cheaper than about anything I could find. It will also let water drain, if it every gets wet inside, and it will keep binders and chains from rattling in the box.
