Subject: Fiat allis loader won't start

| I'm going to go look at a 1980 fiat allis bucket loader unsure of the size guy doesn't know much about it. Says it doesn't start said it ran good then went to start it and it wouldn't start. What should I look for for why its not starting? I'm going to check the filters and make sure that they are getting fuel. Maybe it's a faulty fuel shut off? Any tips for what to look for would be appreciated. |

Need a little more info. What model is it? Does it turn over fast enough? If it does, check if enough fuel or any fuel is getting to the pump. I've had problems with fuel shut off switch but also plugged filters. Also had problems with the master switch under the seat. I never believe "ran when parked" stories. i'd hit him low if you can't hear it run. also i'd be weary of going to get it running...price goes up then...unless you make an explicit deal with him...like if you get it running, it's still xxxx dollars, and you're still willing to buy it no matter what. you may luck out, or you may have a boat anchor |

| As a Salvage or scrapper that is worth MAYBE a Grand, would offer no more as so many things can be wrong from sitting. Brakes, Clutch, or power sift, hydraulics. Bucket looks worse for wear, the owner added chains for slick tires(NOT Cheap if can find replacements) and as noted fuel system is down. |

| That would be cool if it was a true allis chalmers. Thanks everyone for the advice I am going to go look at it and throw a battery in it and see if it turns over ok. Also going to check all fluids. I may offer him 1500 if it looks like it isn't a complete junk pile. Plus I have to figure trucking it's 45 minutes from me. I don't think it is going anywhere with the price he wants so I may make a fair offer if I like it. |

| Now he's saying that he had it running 3 winters ago and it started running rough and he went to start it and the motor wouldn't turn over. So probably the motor is junk. So I'm thinking scrap price is the best I am going to do on it. |

if you have to have it, sounds like a good plan. it could be as simple as a bad starter or as bad as a stuck engine. wonder if it took a slug of water down the intake/exhaust |

| I'm going to bring a pipe wrench with me maybe I can get a bite of the crankshaft pulley to see if I can get it to turn. If I get it I probably will have motor rebuilt if it is rebuild able |

There are lots of 301 engines around, which might be a cheaper way to go then rebuilding it. It looks just like mine, as far as the cab goes. The problem mine has is the intake tube on the transmission is cracked and to replace or repair it entails pretty much dismantling the entire machine. I can run it if I overfill the trans but then it gets hot and doesn't like to move very well. Another one of those winter projects I may never get to. |

When I had my Fiat Allis FR12 which is basically identical to the 545, the no start issue I had was the fuel lift pump. That said, in this case, I think investigating before you invest is where wisdom begins. ------------- Currently- WD,WC,3WF's,2 D14's B. Previously- I 600,TL745,200,FL9,FR12,H3,816 LBH. | I looked at the loader turns out it's a 1966 allis chalmers 545d. It's in decent condition for what it is motor does turn. The engine oil was at proper level coolant was ok. He said he was running it and it started blowing black smoke and lost power. So I'm thinking it could possibly be the injector pump maybe even the turbo. We agreed on a price and I'll be getting it as soon as it's paid in full. I figure worse case scenario I can find a good running motor. Its going to be a good project anyhow I like bringing these old girls back to life. |

| Yes I think it will! I'm going to take my time on it and save up to fix it up so it will be a strong runner again. Does anyone know if I can still get brake cylinders for it? He said the brakes worked but leaked fluid really bad. He put all new lines on it. |

The way you put that, I take it regular hydraulic brakes. If master and wheel cylinders are to pitted to use,and new are not around you send them off and get them sleeved.

There is a very good chance that you can still buy new matching wheel cylinders made by the famous brands. If you can get input from AC Mel on here, I suspect he has done the brakes on one or several of his loaders. He might be out fighting fires there in California, it seems he hasn't been on here much lately.
