I am not a gun man at all, I have a 20 ga shotgun that says 3 inch, can I use 2 3/4 shells in it?  It is just a varmint gun, skunks and such.

Yes you can use the 2 3/4 shells. 3 inch is the max length.

Couple of friends of mine shoot a 20 ga. They use 3" as it has very close to the same amount of shot as a 2- 3/4" 12 gauge. On smaller critters they use 2-3/4 " 20 gauge ammo for the lower recoil.

Have killed plenty of deer with 2 3/4 slugs in my Mossberg 20ga

If shooting skunks with 20ga, I would recommend using heavy 3” mag loads of BB shot size or larger. Using small shot, of say 7 1/2’s, you will need to be within range of getting sprayed for a good kill. You can use 2 3/4” length shells in the gun safely, just will not have the powder & shot that a 3” will hold. I personally like a small caliber rifle for skunks and I am a shotgun guy!

One more thought, if you are using a Side by Side or Over and Under, don’t shoot slugs through it, good way to loosen the rib holding barrels together.
