| I'm going to re-line the brakes in my 190 XT, and I don't have the special punch to squash the rivets. Does anyone know where I could get one, or know of an improvise that works? Thanks in advance, Darrel. |

There are some rivet tools on Ebay, but not cheep for a seldom use item. I have made one using a center punch that I ground four grooves it to the end to cause the rivet to split and look like a factory job. You can clamp another punch of the proper size in a vise to support the head of the rivet, and crimp the other side with the newly made tool and a hammer. This method works fine, but works better with a second person to hold the drun or shoe. ------------- Pullin With AC |

If you can't locate one, I would be happy to loan you my 50+ year old one; you pay shipping both ways. Have used it to set the rivets on brake linings for my D12/D14 brakes and CA hand clutches. It is the type you use a ball peen hammer to strike the tool to set the rivet. Works great for the tubular copper rivets provided with brake lining kits.

Flare the hollow rivets with a large center punch. Finish them with a blunt pin punch at least as large as the rivet head. Support the head of the rivet in the lining with a similar flat tipped punch. It takes three or four hands and a support for the back up punch holding the head. I have a lever operated punch that makes life a lot easier and a couple different much older screw operated punches that I've never seen in catalogs. Gerald J. |

This is my rivet setting tool. Obtained at an estate sale several years ago. Works great for one person. Has the correct size anvils for the tubular flat end brass rivets supplied with clutch and brake lining kits. Flat end of rivet goes on bottom anvil and open end of rivet goes to top anvil. When aligned, strike the top anvil with a ball peen hammer to set the rivet.

I went to local truck shop and used their unit, the one for doing linings on truck brakes used a foot lever to set the rivit.
Also they make brass bolts with fine threads so the linings can be bolted in place. Should be able to find these and truck supply also. ------------- Faith isn't a jump in the dark. I made the two pieces of the tool then you squish the rivet between them in a vice, it was a tad awkward but it did the job and it was free...my price range
A side note, I also wrote the code for that message forum, based it on the old message forum here 'cause I liked how easy it was for new users to work. When I posted this topic I was trying to make an example of a good use for the message boatd as an example and to spark conversations.
