Any  body got any other ideas  short of  pulling  the  head for unsticking a vavle? going into 3rd week of auto trans fluid pb  blaster  tap tap tapp  ,daily  or more ,  tried the rope  nothing, it is  down  and  the spring  hasn't moved  even with pry bars in it . I don't  think compressed air  will work  and i am not willing  to load it  with  grease to try it  . It was  running   but very rough until i pulled the valve cover , spose i could try that again ?

I would have pulled the head after the second try but I am always in a hurry when I get around to doing something even if it has been on my bucket list for years.

One more thing you might try before pulling the head. If yo can compress the spring enough to remove the keepers you might put the keepers in the groove, grip it with vice grips and use a slide hammer to pull it up some so you can start working it up and down. If it is stuck because it is bent nothing will bring it up without moving the guide. If the spring is not fully compressed you can put a socket over the valve and hit it with a hammer and the keepers will fall out. Or maybe fly out so you need a rage over the spring if you don't have extra keepers.

I bet this didn't help much.

Actually removing the head is not that big of a deal. You will need to buy a head gasket.

I've done the slide-hammer trick in a pinch, but I'm with Dick-  if it's stuck that much, you'll be best to just pop the head off...

and while at it, pull and check each valve spring height and tension (probably have a weak one or two in there), wire brush each valve, scrub the stems clean, and make sure every guide is good (not loose or binding) all the pushrods and rockers are straight... clean out the chambers and ports.  Many a 'tired worn-out' engine woke up for me after this process as a perfectly healthy, happy machine.Wink
