It is just not my week! Removing the radiator on a JD 420 to replace the power steering belt.(I'D LIKE TO TALK TO THAT DESIGNER) Went to start the 6060 and the battery was weak. After starting, the alternator light is not on, in fact it doesn't come on when you idle down. It usually does. My battery terminals are corroded, could a poor connection cause the alternator to not charge? My first order of business after the @#$ JD is to clean the battery terminals. The 6060 has a GM alternator with the build in regulator, I've never seen one just up and quit charging.

I thought the light only came on when not charging. Don't know about 6060s.

Red lite on means no charge. Red lite off should mean charging and it shouldn't come on even at an idle. If it does, there's something wrong. The fan belt is on and tight, correct ??

Shouldn't make any difference what the system is on. When you turn the key in the ON position, the light should light normally.  As soon as the Tractor starts, with an Alternator on board, the light should go out and stay out. On some older Generator systems, depending on the Gennie, the light may be slightly glowing until rpms are raised because some Gennie's don't make enough current at very low speeds. Alternators on the other hand always make enough current to put the light out. If the light is on while the Tractor is running, it could be anything from a loose belt as the good Dr. mentioned, corrosion at connections, or a problem in the system somewhere.

OK, first thing will be to clean the battery terminals. This tractor has duel pulleys but only one belt, been going to put 2 belts on. Now is the time.

Thanks, always good info here. No comments about the JD???????
