We switched to using an 8 row corn head on our late L2, and now it doesnt want to lift the header after the machine gets warmed up. We replaced filters, screens, etc, dont have any leaks in the rams, so that means pump, right? Abilene machine wants just over $1000 and cant get them for 2 months, our AGCO dealer priced them over $2000, and thats just a little hard to swallow. Am I correct in assuming that the pump is weak, or am I missing something simpler? Everything else works like it is supposed to, and we have never had any trouble with a grain header or a 6 row (black) corn head, so we just assumed it was the extra weight. If anyone has any ideas, or a source for a new one or parts to rebuild one, we would really appreciate it. Thanks! Adam 417-850-4532

Measure the diameter of the chrome rods on the feederhouse lift cylinders. I think (I don't have a parts book) they are 2 1/2 inches std equipment and 3 inches as an option.....look in a parts book to be SURE.....you have to have the largest diameter offered for an 8-row cornhead.

I know that pump is different from my F2 but can't you buy a O/H kit from AGCO and rebuild it?New wear plates and backup seals made a huge difference on my F2.Dr Allis has a valid point too

I checked and our L2 does have the 3 inch cylinders, they were rebuilt not long ago and dont leak. I looked in the online parts book, and they show a "pump kit" which is the $2000 plus item that they would have to order. Since Abilene is back-ordered, I suspicion that I wouldnt be able to get the Agco one if I wanted it. I have asked everywhere I have called if there is a rebuilt kit for the pump, and no one acts like there is. If anyone could point me in the direction of one, I would be glad to try. Thanks again.

Adam - did you try Cook Tractor in Clinton, MO? They rebuild some hydraulic pumps or may have a good used on one off a salvage combine. If you get a used one, be sure to tell them what your situation is and see if you can get a return guarantee if the used pump doesn't lift your cornhead. Mike

Force= Area*Pressure
To put it simply, if you need to move more mass you will need to add more affected area(larger bore cylinders or an additional cylinder or increase your system pressure).
I had to add the third lift cylinder on a(I hate to say the word MF 750) for a 6 row cornhead years ago.
Don't spend the money on a new pump or any kit until a qualified tech checks out your unit. The fluid will take the path of least resistance-
is it easier to raise your conrhead or go over a relief valve?

What kind of hyd. oil do you use? My L-2 wouldn't lift a series 2 black 20ft grain head. I bought the machine used, the previous owner had IH Hytran in it. My local AGCO mechanic advised me to drain it because Hytran cannot displace heat well enough and begins to foam and thin out. He told me to use Dextron (ATF), so we changed it. Well, it didn't fix the problem. So the next step after we checked all of the plungers in the electric valves was a new hyd. pump. This was a number of years ago, but I got one from the dealer for about $1200. I would see if this might help your problem. We ran an 8-row black corn head on our L-2. I hope your machine is equiped with 30.5-32's, the 3500 engine, and the longer cleaning shoe ( L-2's after 1982) Because you will need it. Another source for parts is Spallenger Combine Parts in Bluffton, Ohio. I'm sorry I could not provide you with the phone #'s, But they are online. Good luck!!!

Thank you all so much for your replies and phone calls with ideas. To answer Jim's questions, it is a late L2 witht he long shoe, 30.5x32s, RWA, 670 engine, etc, at one time it was a custom machine and has twin fuel tanks, so we thought it ought to handle the load. We run Dextron, and when we started having this problem I added a few quarts of Lucas Trans-Tune/stop slip to see if that would help (it didnt). We have gone through the valve bank, checked connections and hot-wired to double check, switch solenoids around, etc, didnt help either. At Clay's suggestion, I did try Mike's and they had used but not new or reman. I called Cook's, same story. Slade had checked on SSB Tractor, and when I called them they were out of stock. We do have some spare 3" lift cylinders, so we will try to fabricate a mount or two and try that out in the morning. Thanks again for all the help guys. I will keep you posted how it turns out.

Do you still got your 6 row and can it pick it up or the grain head. I had problems with a valve stack on our N5. It would try to pick it up, but couldn't. Also when picking up, do you have steering, etc.

Always check pressures before assuming its the pump. A $10 gauge will tell you alot.

We spent this morning at the shop trying out the ideas mentioned above. We put a pressure gauge on one of the hoses going to a ram, and measured right at 1900 psi. We thought that ought to be good enough, so we took the advice of Jim and Tom, and welded some brackets to put a 3rd cylinder in the system. Got that all done, fired it up, and it works just fine. Dad has been cutting for about an hour and half and reports that all is still working well. Thanks for all your helps and ideas. Saved us a bundle of $$ that wouldnt have fixed the problem anyway! Thanks again!

Tom The corn isnt much to brag about. Rains have been few and far between this summer, and spotty when there was rain. We are all dryland corn here, and our best corn is around 100 bushel an acre, and it goes down from there. My father in law lives about 100 miles straight west of me in Kansas, he planted his about a week earlier than us, and got one shower we didnt, and his best was 135. Its just that type of year this year I guess. Thanks for the help on the cylinder suggestion, we are still going strong and will hopefully finish tomorrow.

Glad that I could help. 100 bu./acre, that was my target for corn back in the late 70s-early 80s. As you mentioned some years were better than others.
