Hi all. Hope you are all well. I am continuing to learn tractor mechanics on my 170 Allis with 4.236 Diesel thanks to all of you.
DSeries4, thanks for the steering wheel tip, all went well and I have a new steering wheel. I also was able to get the crankshaft pulley off without taking off the front end. The seal was a real bugger. I did get it out, or at least most of it? There is still a metal ring in the housing which I think should have come out with the seal. The new seal does not have a metal ring around it nor does it, the compression spring is right there to see. It is a hard rubber material which might have metal inside.
What I'm asking is does anyone know if I am correct in thinking the metal ring inside the housing was the exterior part of the old original seal and it didn't come out with the seal, and is the new one made differently so I shouldn't expect to see a metal housing around it. The seal I ordered from Allstate Ag parts had an oem number of 70229229 and appears to fit into the engine housing if that metal collar was out. As always, any info is greatly appreciated.
Will

Most all oil seals have the metal ring and rubber with compression spring- id take a couple self tapping screws and try to get them in the metal ring and work it out,, should come out with vise grips on them , its worked for me any how
