Looking to setup a new puller. Looking for an open class tractor with these rules Model must have starting production in 1960 or older OPEN:
ENGINE BLOCK AND CRANKCASE MUST BE SAME LENGTH, HEIGHT, NUMBER OF CYLINDERS, FUEL TYPE AND MAKE AS STOCK
30% OVER RPM
8 MPH MAX, ANY GEAR
WHEELIE BARS REQUIRED, SIDE SHIELDS & SCATTER BLANKET RECOMMENDED
18.4 X 38 MAX – ANY CUT, NO DUALS OR RADIALS
20 IN HIGH & 18 IN MIN DRAWBAR
Would prefer a diesel but if parts are scarce or modifications are limited gas works as well.
NOT NECESSARILY LOOKING FOR ENOUGH POWER TO RUN 8MPH. Right now running stock class 2.5 mph and wasnt to step it up a bit

Diesel engine will never make as much HP as a gas engine unless it is turbocharged, which you cannot do. What is the maximum weight you can haul on your trailer/truck ??

If you want to pull an A-C, the newest and largest is a D-17. A D-15 fits the 1960 criteria, but would be a very poor choice. Other than that, the usual WC, WD, WD45, B - C, CA and maybe a UC.

How many cubic inches can the d17 engine be built up to. Ive got a pretty mild 240 in my wd that's competitive in the stock class but want to build an open class tractor

As Aaron asked What weight class are you looking at? 2500/3000=CA 3000/3500 =WC 4000/6000 =D17
------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

D-17 can pull 4250. I regularly pull 4500 and up.
Bare weight of mine with 14.9 x 38's is 3800 lbs.

U can go over 400 cubes, but the rod ratio gets alittle far out for running 3000 rpms. Stay around 300 and do a lot of air flow work, cam, cam timing, carb work. Get ur head flowing but not to big on valve size. Get manifold flowing good or a header. $$$$$$$ makes hp

At 30% over RPM limit, the best he could do is about 2400 rpm anyway. I've heard of 400 being common. Antique tractor pullers may well be like fishermen though. Sometimes they use a different tape when they are measuring... AaronSEIA

3000 rpm is easy to make, I do not run mine that high. But the guys that run open usually don't run a govener. WI50 use to run his WC up to 6000 rpm, he ran around 290 cubes.

My 17 weighs 3640 no driver with 15.5 38s. What bore and stroke are you using to get 435 ci?
