Did all wc blocks have 12 head bolts? I took an engine out of a WC that had 15 head bolts in it. It was cracked and the guy brought me a block that had 12 bolts. Just wondering when the change was made. Other than that, are all the blocks the same through a WC - WD 45 the same? Thanks, Randy

The head bolt change came later on AND many old blocks got drilled/tapped for the extra three studs on the spark plug side. The WC/WD blocks look pretty much the same over the years and have the removeable plate covering the lifter galley on the right side. There were at least 4 or 5 different block castings over the years, and each time more iron was added for strength and reliability. In the latest WD version the upper center main brg area is filled in where older blocks are hollow. The WD45 block doesn't have the plate on the right side, which makes it easy to identify. With each block casting change, the newest blocks were the replacement for any older blocks. So, in let's say 1956, you needed a block for your old WC, you would be given a WD45 block, because the older blocks were discontinued.

Early wc had 12 head bolts, later WC AND WD had 15. WD45 also had 15 but a little different casting. All blocks will interchange. MACK

Can not get on messenger to reply. If your head has 15 holes, I would drill and tap block for 15 bolts.
If pin is same place from top and using same crank, Pistons should come up to same place as before. Measure distance from top of piston to top of head gasket with piston down, then with piston up. Divide top into bottom will give you approximate compression ro. providing they are flat top pistons. MACK
