Folks, Guess I am missing those phone calls with Don Bradley. So I wrote a little piece and am going to try to attach it here. It’s only nuts and bolts! 2-22-2020 The WD45 was on its knees at the auction block One more bid and it was ours. As I proudly loaded it my first call was to Don for a talk He congratulated me and we reviewed the weather We grew as friends speaking often of tractors and life So far apart so close together I did not know the future of this old orange tractor was in Don’s hands He was going to refurb this tractor a thousand miles from his shop After some time I called him and said the 45 is sick the oil looked light gray and way too thick. He said set down we need to talk And we did for many hours and many times after that He would say, now you write this down I’m going to give you the list Don’t stray from this path it is the way we will fix it I found the cracks in the block just as he said You can fix this tractor or “knock it in the head” I being older and more stubborn felt it needed to be saved I mean when would another worn out 45 come our way I didnt know we had no time to find another We dove into this one and he helped on each move I had the expert on the other end of the phone He was happy I found a good block when I called him at home Don said set down there are more things and details to know Those mains need line honed. The crank may be bad Lets do this right and you will be happy you have I have a way to fix the thrust, not many will listen Remember he noted Its only nuts and bolts you can do this I’ll help, call me any time
I ask if this detail really mattered. He noted that you could look the other way on that one. But dont mess up on this new list of things to check On the setting the sleeves he was firm and noted Get this part right, it is very important. It took hours to do but he wanted it right How was I going to take it apart and put it together? He said not to worry he was just a phone call away. His recommendations were noted and written on scraps We discussed every point The valve lash, the head torque, the seals and the fits Get the book out and study it, then call with questions he quipped Things that were broken and parts need to be fixed I was tired and sore and it took a long time Dust and dirt in my eyes and hands covered in grime How was he going to help me from so many miles away? He did it one phone call and talk at a time. The tractor became a reason to call, but not all Our kids, our grandkids were discussed often too The calls were about family the weather and the farms Lot of encouragement came from the other end of the line Before he hung up he would note Hey dont forget, on that tractor It’s only nuts and bolts! Given the reins he would have made this into a hopped up machine but he could hear in my voice I wanted this one box stock with that Persian Orange gleam He knew every move I was making and quietly gently guided me through Don followed me on the forum, watching for errors, I would get a phone call from the master critiquing my work Some improvements to make some mistakes he let me make It will be a strong tractor you’ll be proud of the work you have done
Constant reassurance would be heard on the phone We built it all stock his knowledge I absorbed He was so proud, maybe prouder than me. When that 45 came to life on the very first turns I called Don and he just beamed over the phone Don’t say you can’t do it. You wrenched on the whole thing It was really his tractor, as I look back with a smile The last time we talked we discussed the orange 45 Setting the governor was discussed for a while He said I have to go, Little did I know it would be our last call Very pleased to have been able to help Don refurbish “our” WD45 tractor Remember It’s only nuts and bolts

Don was a young 62 and I can understand why he had congestive heart failure. His heart was SO BIG,,,,,I too spent hours on the phone with him. He ALWAYS had time for others and "there is no such thing as a dumb question on these tractors".
You did really good on that Chris. I'm sure he's proud and smiling down on all of us. I haven't seen anything of Bobby on here? Anybody heard from him?

I was actually looking for Bobby. Lost my dad a month ago and was thinking about him. I talked to Don a hand full of times trying to troubleshoot a few things. One was a troublesome AC on an L2. Don’t remember the other but we talked for quite a while both times. I almost went to his plow day but got busy on the farm. Now I wish I had made time. Life is too short and precious.

Dittos Tom... " Was a wealth of info. I'm sure he is being missed by everyone that knew him"
It was interesting to read what he had to say in his replies to other people's troubles. Sure wanted to go to the show where he was demonstrating the right way to install pan gaskets but had to suffice for the video. Talked to him a couple times, once was in 2018 at Hutch.
Was thinking about asking him if he desired to do anther 45 diesel engine but he departed from us way to soon.

Just a comment Don made to me many times! He told me to stay away from those old 45D's. He said if I bought one and it needed rebuilt, to have a extra 5 grand in my wallet to do it right! I am sure he was correct. I have skirted around those when I had a chance at them. I had plans to stop at Don's this June when we we going to Denver. The trip didnt happen. Would enjoy talking with Bobby. Don spoke so highly of him and was so proud that Bobby was getting interested in these old tractors too! Here is the WD45 he helped me with. Regards,

Excellent writing, Chris! A great tribute to Don. I had the privilege of taking a class that Don & son Bobby taught. "Why Won't My Tractor Start?" Dan Hauter.

Bobby Bradley can be reached at 660-909-5406. I last saw him at the Missouri Allis-Chalmers Club's swap meet at Lathrop, MO in early March. Bobby has his own health issues, lost his dad, & has the estate to settle. That's likely why we haven't heard much from him. Bobby co-taught the class with his dad and both of them did a great job!

Chris, You will have those thought for your life time. Those are the ones that keep us going during our darkest hours. Cherish! On another note, "DON" would look good stenciled on that tractor somewhere. I.M.H.O.

Just thought I'd add this: It was obvious during the class that Don was proud of Bobby and thoroughly enjoyed having Bobby as his co-teacher. Don & Bobby worked well together. Dan.
