NAW,,,I ain't talkin bout "That",,,,,  Actually ,,,talkin bout my Pride and Joy,,lathe,,,,  The last 3-4 weeks ,I started noticing where the carriage had started to be stiff when crankin as it don't have power cross. I kept puttin it off and it just got worst and worst till it just flat refused to move this morning. Dismantled the whole thing and glad I did. there were so many gookies in every nook and cranny ,,it's a wonder anything even moved. The half nuts were almost totally gummed up. Took bout 2 1/2 hours of degreasing and cleaning scarf . Found a lot of cast iron "powder" in the half nuts as I did do some machining on cast iron last week. The 35 year machinist that I worked with would always use compressed air to blow all the scarf off the lathes and I remember asking him if a good idea as a lot of it would surely get blown into those places you don't want it in, but he told me I was full of chit,,and keep blowing it off!! What I'm going to do henceforth is use an old vacuum to vacuum the scarf off the machine instead of blowing it into the machine,,,, Just curious what others do,,,,

I took welding in High School but everyone also got a chance to try the other parts of the shop... so had an opportunity to do some lathe work too, don't remember much...grinding tools for cutting, adjusting the machine... memories... that was 50+ years ago... Sorry no help on the cleaning thing. ------------- Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die |

I have a small older Atlas lathe and I'm the third generation to use it! I clean it with a vacuum and a small paintbrush to get loose particles out that the vac nozzle won't quite get into. |

YEP.......... vacuum, then a few drops of 30wt in the critical areas.. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

| Back in the early 80's I worked with 2 Journeyman Machinists. One trained in Germany and one from Sweden. They were both very adamant: "never use compressed air to clean a lathe of milling machine". Fine pieces of metal get into the moving parts. They always used a small brush. |

machine shop at STELCO ( now gone...) , last 1/2hr of the day was 'cleanup' time. ALWAYS had very tidy and clean workstations... ------------- 3 D-14s,A-C forklift, B-112 Kubota BX23S lil' TOOT( The Other Orange Tractor) Never burn your bridges, unless you can walk on water |

Say,,DMiller,,,I do have one of those big Craftsman shop vacs but I need to find an additional hose to splice together so I can leave the vac itself close bt and not be in the way,,,Good Idea,,!! SAY,,,Omaha Phil,,,you reminded me of something on my "To Do" list,,,,
I have my first lathe that I bought some years back and am going to post it for sale here and the lathe forum. It is a Craftsman 109 and sometime back somebody here had expressed an interest in it, so I fished it out where it been for several years,,,then forgot about it. There's this dude on another forum that gave me a Heads up for posting pics with an IPhone,,so I'll give it a go . |
