I have a allischalmers wd-45 and I am starting the restore process and I was wondering what are the fluid types in the tranmission and differital. usually most difff's are 80W90 gear lube, is that correct? what is the tranmission flius viscosity? any suggestions?

The transmission, rear end, and final drives are lubed with gear lube; usually 80W90. The hydraulics are serviced with any good brand of universal hydraulic fluid. Originally the hydraulics were serviced with engine oil. There is no drain plug for the final drives pans; either remove them or suction the old lube out. There are drain plugs for the transmission and the rear end on the bottom of their housings. There are 2 drain plugs for the hydraulics. One is on the bottom of the main housing and it is also a magnetic plug that should be wiped clean. The other is a plug on the bottom of the hydraulic control unit on the aft end of the hydraulic pump body. There is also a drain plug on the bottom of the PTO housing.

I forgot one thing although you didn't ask. The air cleaner originally was serviced with engine oil also. I used ATF in mine. I felt like it coated the wire media better and worked better in the winter. If you air cleaner is really full of dried dirt/sludge/stuff just take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out. The media can be removed by disassembling the housing but it is really not made to take apart.

Thank you for your reply! the drain plug that is located on the bottom of the PTO housing, is that part of the hydralic oil or is that part of the transmission oil? the reason I asked is becuase I have a bad leak from the seal in the PTO housing so I dropped it of of the tractor and it had very little oil in the PTO housing. I installed a new national seal, it pressed in just fine and I am ready to bolt it back to the bottom of the tractor. It looks like to me its part of the transmission not the hydraclic oil, is that correct?

Yes its very dirty in the air cleaner. I wil do that about taking to a radiator shop to clean it and i will go back with ATF. Thanks

I've seen a number of posts indicating that you can use Hy-Trans in the transmission, rear end and hydraulic unit. Use the heavier 89-90 weight in the finals. Good move boiling out the air cleaner - engine will breathe easier with a clean filter. Had one that was so dirty that I couldn't get enough air flow to get the fuel mixture lean enough.

i am not sure where the PTO housing gets it fluid from. does it get its fluid from the Hydraclic fliud section or does the PTO housing get its fliud from the transmission fluid section?

PTO oil comes from the diff/ trans. It can flow between the compartments through a bearing. THE PTO has a fill also by the clutch lock lever. Check it. If you didnt get much oil out that means its been running dry. Use 80 90 gear oil in the trans and diff. Lubes hand clutch and gears better.

Thank you. There was a oil spot under the tractor on the ground about 4 feet in diameter. it was easy to find this bad seal, it looked like something hit the seal from bushhogging. yes the PTO housing was dry so yes i think it had all leaked out(hope it wasnt ran with low fluid). I will put 80 90 back in it after i get the PTO housing bolted back up on the bottom of the tractor.
