That is a pain, but no one got hurt, and I'm sure they'll rebuild, or you could open one and make a killing selling beers.

My condolances, Kiwi... truely.

A college classmate of mine was native to a town out from Christchurch (perhaps West Melton?) and to help ease some obvious homesickness, I brought up my 'extra' motorcycle so he could wander the small towns of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin on off-days.  He was clearly much more comfortable in our small town pubs.  It doesn't matter where our lineage came from, small town pubs have been much more than just a place to drink or get food.  Losing a long-standing social establishment in ANY environment is hard.

Please-  find a way to rebuild it, and make sure it's done in such a way that 'government' doesn't get in the way. ;-)

Rebuilding is a good option, but you need to be young, can work long hours, are very personable, honest, give some beers away, don't drink and single to successfully own and run a pub.  Lots of work, but also lots of fun.
I've seen places that rebuild come out ahead because of all the years of listening to the patrons wish you had......or maybe if you put in........

Sorry for the loss for the whole town, but especially you.  I know what it's like to lose a favorite watering hole.  Happy New year from up Nort.
