Any experts/people with experience please chime in. I have apart a "Bal-Pak" bearing for investigative purpose. My question is; Were these bearings shipped in parts, then they were assembled/pressed together before install? I have determined there is a sealed New Departure bearing inside the round case that clamps to hangers. These bearings inside are still available. I don't quite understand why AC thought this design was good [ maybe it really wasn't any good, although 5 out of 8 were still rolling on my disc].

The ND bearing looks almost 100% sealed from the grease spaces on either side of it. I guess that grease was to trap dirt and crud from actually getting to actual bearing itself. I going to try and press the thing apart next.

I have a sales brochure for the WD pickup disc, and it touts the Bal-Pak design as having "two way seals". A cut-away view shows a normal looking sealed ball bearing housed inside a tube with seals at both ends and describes it as follows:

INNER SEALS

The bearing carrier itself has a tight-fitting seal arrangement which makes it virtually impossible for dirt and weather to enter. Seals consist of felt liners, one on each side of the bearings, set in positive shields with overlapping members.

OUTER SEALS

The heavy steel housing in which the bearing carrier is set, acts as a first line of defense against dirt and weather. This housing is packed with heavy, long-fiber grease that serves as an ideal dirt stopper. Like the bearing grease, it too, is sealed in at the factory - for life.

I'd say the fellow that wrote that liked a lot of commas :-)

Brett, Thanks for those details. I see some "covers" on either side[s] of the bearing, that is maybe the inner seals, the outers are rubber, the grease I scrapped out of the outer chamber was black, heavy, grease, 1 side was intact, other side empty on this "donor" bearing. If you look in parts book, it list's parts being shipped as a "kit", that is why I was hoping someone had info on these.
