Hey Thad,,,I started to look at ordering the overhaul parts for the 454 that is goin into the  Big Bad Black Silverado and I come across this note on the camshafts. I remembered you telling me bout this and also jogged my memory as we used to include the zink additive way back then on all rebuilds,,altho,,we never did the oil change followup like this one says to do,,,,Can't understand how the government has outlawed the zink additive yet article says it is available in parts stores,,,,WTF,,,???

NOTE: THE U.S. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS OUTLAWED THE USAGE OF ZINC IN OILS MANUFACTURED AND/OR SOLD IN THIS COUNTRY. FLAT TAPPET CAMSHAFTS REQUIRE A ZINC ADDITIVE WITH EVERY OIL CHANGE, OR THERE WILL BE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE CAM. WE OFFER ZDDP4 ADDITIVE, AND IT IS INCLUDED IN SOME, BUT NOT ALL OF OUR CAM KITS. IT IS READILY AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL PARTS HOUSE. (This does not apply to roller cam applications)

NOTE: ALL FLAT TAPPET CAMS REQUIRE ZINC ADDITIVE WITH EVERY OIL CHANGE, INCLUDING WITH BREAK-IN OIL. THIS IS FOR ALL NON-ROLLER CAMS. CAM FAILURE WILL RESULT FROM NOT USING A ZINC ADDITIVE, AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL PARTS HOUSE.

note,,I'm glad my government is lookin out for me, tho,,,,,

Joe, in my motorcycle group there are several who replaced lifters and then ate cams quick. I give $12.50 a quart for the oil I run in mine to get the proper ZDDP. I replaced my lifters a year ago. I used cam break in lube and added ZDDP to Non synthetic oil for the break in period . Several thousand miles later I’m going strong.

Rotella was the last I recall having enough ZDdp for a flat tapper engine.

I’ll also add that in my racing days I used Rotella for break in oil then switched to Castro’s 2050.
I believe Rotella t4?? Might be flat tappet friendly.
