We Unload wagons with an 8x51 PTO auger with our 180. We bought this auger used and no manual was with it (Mayrath brand).I have been a "stickler" for maintaining 540 on the working tach, but should we attempt to run the 180 closer to "Wide Open" ??

Can't say from experience but I've always been told 540 means 540 not 541

Keep it at 540.

We used to unload into a 8X51 auger that we hooked to our farmall H. We never ran the tractor wide open or at pto speed, we ran the tractor at half throttle. It never had any trouble and was not as noisy. I would use whatever speed you comfortable at.

Many of the old tractors I ran had a PTO Speed on the Tach when equipped. PTO of 540 on my 180 is closer to 1900 on the engine, and is marked on the tach face.

Agreed.  540 or LESS.

if you have a spreader in the bin, look while it's working, don't over load it from the auger. we also used an old "H" on our 61 ft auger and ran it about 1/2 throttle, a lot less wear on the auger at slower speeds keeping the flights full.
