| Good afternoon guys. I have been trying to find some answers through other forums and this one for that matter on a potential project. I have a 54 Chevy 3800 that my great grandfather bought new. It is in remarkably good shape other than it has been sitting for 20 years due to the fact that water was left in it on accident after it was parked and now has a 18" crack down the side. I have done measurements and also figured out how to make a 301 turbo hook up. With that knowledge, I can not find out if anyone else has done this, and if they have how much (if any) the pump needed to be turned up to move the truck down the road @ highway speed. I can approximate the hp tq of the 301 but they are est at best. I also know that the original 235 made 112 hp and 200 NET power. Any help would be appreciated, and sorry for the long post. |

The Allis motor is probably rated at 2000 rpm.... What speed is the 235 running at 60 MPH down the road ? It may not be a horse power issue, it may be an RPM issue / gearing. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

A lot of them were rated at 4,000 and although they would blow up if you ran them that hard, that was a false hp rating in my book. The 235 was rated at around 30 TAXABLE hp. --- they were great engines and we had a dozen of them that were from 53 to 62. We never ran them hard so they did great for us. If you put a different engine in, all the clutch/bellhousing stuff never works. My 190 runs at 2200, but I never run it more than 1800, anything over that the motor don't sound so good, (overspeed) so factor in the max economy speed and gear vehicle according. On a side note my f-350 diesel runs at 50 mph with engine right on 1500 rpm. engine sounds good, and it gets 16 mpg at that speed, so you have to match rpm/torque to get a balance point for the engine. Whatever you use needs to run at a mid-point so it dont blow up. Overspeed is the biggest killer of engines.---just watch tractor pulls!! ------------- http://machinebuildersnetwork.com/ |
