I have a D-17 Series IV that we replaced the clutch in a few years ago. Everything was alright for a while, then the clutch started sticking and now you can not shift gears without shutting the tractor off. As you know, there is no adjustment for the clutch on a D-17. The tractor sits in a building that has a damp dirt floor. I suspect that the steel clutch plate has rusted. Do you have any suggestions other than break it apart again and replace the disc?

Whenever I replace the clutch in an S4 or older 170/175, I always replace the clutch shaft and hollow shaft seals. While the hollow shaft is out, I remove the brass bushing inside of it to prevent it from dragging along the clutch shaft. It might not be your clutch, it could be the hollow shaft bushing.
