OK,,on the 1982 Silverado C10 I bought a couple of weeks ago,,,,Yes Shameless,,I bought a Chevy to stay in your good graces,,,,,Clap I finally got to where I was wantin to put a spark in the engine to see what the miss is, so I put some new spark plugs and fired it up,,it ran but was very rough as it gots the quadrajet carb with bout 5 1/2 miles of vac hoses,,and most of them had been plugged by the PO, so,,I removed all that chit and throwed thet carb in the cawnor and was just lucky to have an adapter for a Holley/ AFB to a quadrajet,so I installed the AFB and fired engine up again. Still had the little miss and engine would "pop" out the carb when tryin to rev engine up,,,would do it every time in reving up. Thinkin engine might have a burned valve or worse,,I pulled the new plugs and ran a compression check and all the cylinders had from 100# to 115# compression,,,WTH,,,?? I just knew there would be one cylinder with low numbers but these numbers, while not the best, are very good for this old a trk,,,, Anybody got a clue,,,????

Flat lobe on the cam. 305’s are well known for it.

Yeah, Trucker,,that was first thing I checked and timing was way fast as engine turned over some slow and perked right up after backing off the timing  bout 6-8°,,now starts  right up and revs up better but has that dang backfire to it.

Aw,,CHIT,,,Thad,,I remember now bout you tellin me them 305's were notorious for bad camshaft lobes,,,chit, chit,,, Guess I better pull valve covers and see if I can spot which one(s) it is. I can also hear a loose lifter on driver side which may explain the bad lobe,,huh?? UMMmm,,,you gots a good 327 or 350 in your back pocket,,,,,WinkWink

Well for what it's worth. Dad's truck at the farm 1988 Chevy with the 4.3 V6. It don't get used much and for last 5 years it has ran terrible. Pulling out on the highway was dangerous as it would choke, backfire, hesitates, puke, caugh and if you were patient enough and feather the throttle you could get it up to speed in about a half mile. Anywho I had already changed the fuel filter 5 years ago when it started and ran several tanks of treated gas through it. Last summer I changed the cap, rotor, wires, plugs and ignition module and none of that helped. Took it to the shop and they called me and asked if it sat much of the time. Well yes. They changed the filters and added a can of Seafoam and said it was bad gas or water in the gas.

That's all I got but the darn truck runs like a top now. Still scratching my head.

Wink Joe it's a Chevy sent it to O'l Shameless and work on one of them Ford's.LOLLOLLOL

Confused

I ant no mehanic Confused  but have fought a Chevy or 3. In the wonderful days when those trucks were current, perfect if you ask mister "pretty". The very fragile carbon wires,I think a bit tougher today. The plate in the disturber that gets cracks, and then the cam that gets flat.  WinkAll of that works they run unless they are shenaigaining you, Confused which has been known to happen. LOL

Wink If my remember, is not telling me wrong, the cam could go from ok to  bad real quick.

Well,,Guys,,,it lookin like I did NOT luck out on this Silverado as I pulled the driver side valve cover and 3 of the four exhaust rocker arms do not move at all,,,,CHIT, CHIT, CHIT,,!!! THats weird as I drove the trk up on the trailer and while it had a slight miss,,there was no indication THEN of the flat camshaft lobes. It's just getting worse the more the engine runs,,I guess,,,,I checked the oil level and is full on the dipstick. The trk has the oil pressure gauge instead fo the lights and even now is carrying 25# at idle and 50# when reved up,,,,Should I replace oil pump with these pressures??
Guess I need to start dis-assembling everything to pull the engine tomorrow and at the very least,, put a new camshaft and lifters in it. I've replaced camshafts in SBC's without pullin the engine but I'm gonna pull engine so I can clean and detail it really nice.
Was there a design flaw with the metallurgy of the camshafts in the 305's or,,,????
OH,,one more for the Chevy people,,I can pick up a clean 350,,(I think mid to late 80's) for a good price but it is the  throttle body type where mine is a carburator type. Could I put my intake manifold and distributor on the  throttle body block,,,??????

First see if it has a fuel pump plate and bore? Some did some didn’t. The intake will have to be redrilled /egg shaped if I recall correct. A tbi carb manifold can be had fairly cheap if you prefer that.

Center intake bolts go in straight up and down not square to mating surfaces on TBI heads

Chit,,Thad,,after re-reading my last post,,,even I can't really understand WTF I want to do,,,,,,LOL Yeah, the dude did tell me I would have to "wallow out" some of the bolt holes on  MY manifold in order to work on the TBI heads/block,,,then something else bout the distributor,,then will have to modify the ECM and,,,and,,,chit, too danged complicated,,believe I'll pass on thet 350. Gonna pull the 305 and tear it down see if it fixable and still keep lookin for a 327 or a 350,,,Clap
Anyway, my 305 does have a block mounted fuel pump,,,,,,

Joe it’s really not that complicated and you could run carb heads on that TbI motor. The fuel pump would be the only deal breaker for me. Maybe half the TBI motors will accept a fuel pump.

Thad, can't he just mount an electric fuel pump on?

Wink Joe other than the old time frugal nature of wanting to recycle, it's not that expencive to replace the cam shaft.

That cam can get real bad real fast. My dad and his best buddy liked going to the livestock auction a 100 miles away. Nether liked wrenches and all that grease and oil. They liked LOL horse and cow poo much better. They had 2 or more trucks to pick to drive, and I think they had a cow or 10 in a trailer. So not being tuned in to mechanics they may have missed the signs, but made it to sale and on the way home they couldn't go any futher. A new cam in the O'l 350 and that truck went a lot more miles.

I know the rest of the world is not so regulated,ConfusedCry but here putting a different engine size in than the factory used causes all manor of paper work head acks. And I know part of it has to with the feds that I think could even happen in your part of the world.

Oh the friend down the road that does engine machine work also told me 7 psi in chevy was all you needed for oil pressure. Claimed race guys liked it low to not be wasting power they could use for other purposes.LOLLOLLOL An the one of a kind of stuff is what he liked, cause he liked to do oddball stuff. So lots of work for race car guys as well as the Baja off road guys. Also just learned the old Caterpillar oil pressure gauges that didn't have any numbers the normal was 7 to 20 psi.

I had a great 327 that I had put in my dad's truck, then one of the stock holders sold the truck out from under me to the scrap yard. they had it crushed before I could retrieve it. he got the corp. $64. for the whole truck, rust free '67 Chevy …..PffffT!

Hey Shameless,,,I gots bout a half case of  ACV and TWO cases of Black LABEL I'll trade you for thet 327,,,Ten Four,,,,??? WinkWink (poke, poke,,)

Yeah, Dave,,thas what i'm headed for,,I just bout got all the wires and things disconnected except for the torque convertor bolts and she's comin out,,,Clap Man,,!!  the PO must of been pourin the oil daily to this engine,,the back, sides are built up with bout 1 1/2" of oil, dirt, chit and everything it so thick,,I'm glad It comin out for a good cleaning,,!!Clap
Something real puzzling tho,,,,,the exhaust manifolds are both like the ones on the 265's of 55 and 56 vintage. They are not the rams horn style like I figured they would be but the PO told me they bought the trk "almost" new in OKlahoma and engine has never been opened up,,,,only'ist thing they done was a new starter and quadrajet carb. I tend to believe him as all the bolts have been super tight,,chit,,,I like to never got the bolts on the A/C compressor broke loose,,had to get a 1/2" drive breaker and a 3 foot cheater on 3 of them,,!!
No problem on the manifolds as I already gots a set of Hookers to take their place along with a couple of 36" glass packs,,,,,yippie   yay,,,,,It gonna sound so good,,,I be thinkin I'm back in the 50's like one of them youngsters,,,,ClapLOLLOL

I have a tube of cam break in lube and some zddp I can mail you if you go the cam route. The new oil won’t have nuff zddp for flat tapper cam break in. Let me know.

Posted By: desertjoe
Date Posted: 30 Aug 2019 at 4:30pm

Dang,,Thad,,I had not heard that word in a LONG time,,!! We used to add a small bottle of the break- in oil that was primarily ZDDP in every engine we built that was gonna see severe duty,,as in  "leadfoot use",,,,WinkWink  I wonder why the Mfgrs stopped selling it but I remember when John Force first came onto the scene,, his main sponsor was Castrol and the ZDDP was their primary focus in their commercials back then.
I plumb got out of tearing them engines up that we spent so much money on building them up,,,,Wink just to do it again the following weekend,,,,,LOL
I haven't done a complete rebuild in a long time,,fact is,, I think the 406 in ole Red IS the last one I done. I think I still have bout half a tube of Lubriplate in the cabinet that was the last thing that went on the bearings before lashing up the engine,,,,The only'ist thing good bout them "good ole days" is they is maybe gone forever,,, sigh, sigh,,,
So far,,I've had 3-4 others tell me bout the inherant problem with the 305 engines. was it a metallurgy problem with the camshafts or was it an oiling problem I need to watch for if I rebuild this engine?????

Every one of them coppers,,,er,,,I mean "Officers" told me to be careful of what I was doing and not a one would tell me what I was being pulled over for,,,,,,,one of the state troopers stuck his head in the window and whispered,,,,,"You ever been to Nebraska?"
I KNEW IT THEN,,!! So,,you see now,Chask,?? LOL IF,, he says it took him 2 hours to change thet camshaft,,,,who am I to disagree,,,he prolly had ole Les and ole JohnKC and,,,and,,a couple of them stockholders helpin him but I ain't sayin NUTTIN,,,,LOL
