Can't say what they look like for quality today but years ago in our mechanics class, the teach cut some filters apart and Fram were poor poor quality, the poorest in fact. At least they were back then. Glued together pleated paper vs a metal crimped pleated paper. Many fewer pleats and a pretty poor anti drain valve. I cut some filters apart not too many years ago myself and found nearly the same conclusion. Baldwin and Cenex filters seemed the best put together filters with heavy duty parts and far more pleated paper element in each filter. You can get a Mobil 1 at Wally World for just a couple of bucks more. It's a far better filter. |

The glued paper element will probably come apart rendering your engine with zero filtration. Now maybe Fram has a better filter today or they offer a top shelf quality filter that cost more than the Home Depot version, I don't know but I wouldn't have much faith in the $3.98 filter. If I were you, for $4 buy one and cut it apart and compare to a Wix(NAPA) or Baldwin. I'm betting that the Baldwin wins hands down in quality. | I’ve seen the insides of a Fram on Youtube. Fram now has 3 different grades of filters. Obviously this is the cheapest of the 3. A Fram will give you at best 40 microns of filtration. A Mobil 1 will filter down to 25 microns. A Purolator Boss will filter down to 20 microns and has extra capacity, but at $18 a pop it isn’t worth it. |

| Thanks for all the replies . When I got my D 15 the oil filter was unreadable . PH8A Fram is the number I was advised to use . Anyone have any other numbers ? Thought this was a good filter marked down because it's a slow mover . Thanks again |

right, made by Wix for years. Good filter but the 190 filters I took apart the Baldwin was better probably for the sole reason it had something like 20 or 25 more pleats in the paper. These were new old filters I had lying on the shelf so I cut them apart and that was one thing I found. Also cut apart a Fram PH8A and Cenex and Purolator equivalent. The ph8a size, is what was used in most Fords for years and years. There is also one that has the same mounting size, but is shorter in length. ( ph 30 or 35 ? not for sure on the number) So in any brand you need a 60's - 80's Ford V-8 filter. 90%+ of them used the same filter. |

NAPA Gold (they can match it to the Fram) are a decent filter as well, IIRR it is made by WIX. No problem running the Fram for years but none of my D-Series get past 100 hrs. anymore before filter/oil change. If D15 Series One, don't be fooled by checking the oil cup and finding nice clean oil as I've had them quickly "go dirty"pretty darned quick. Gotta maintain that inlet as well and I tend to drop it once or twice between oil changes when heavy brush cutting, pull the assy. off yearly and clean it well.

NAPA 1515, Wix 51515, Baldwin B2, Motorcraft FL1, AC PF2. The larger 190XT filter 74027979 will bit the base. It has a larger diameter and longer body. You know that's a good point..we have been mostly no-till for the last 30 years. I remember when cleaning up equipment was a serious chore. now not so much. I'm sure the tractor is breathing a lot less dirt than when we plowed and disked 3x lol! |

From what I just heard from a friend of mine that runs pre-Arca series race cars, the $4 Fram will be more than sufficient LOL!! My friend says ANY filter can be cut open to glean whatever outcome they desire ?? I personally have run fram filters on 6 different vehicles since '79, and dad ran them on D 17,14,15,19 and a 180,no engine issues.
BTW, we have at least 1 of those filters sitting on a shelf, we no longer have the D 15

Not an expert, just spends 10's of thousands of $$ on engines for machining/performance. He says the "fram stigma" started in the early '70's (and got rectified) and some people just can't let it go

The last Fram I cut open was in 2016 and the stigma was still going strong then. They make a cheap POS filter hands down. Motorcraft FL1-A is the direct replacement for the PH8-A. The FL400 has the same base just a smaller filter element. I have been using Fram filters in all my vehicles since my first one in 1989. The neighbor I worked for back then used Fram exclusively on all his farm tractors and vehicles. He had gone to school for mechanics prior to returning to the family farm with his Dad. That was good enough for me. He taught me A LOT about vehicle maintenance and repair. None of my vehicles have ever gone to the junkyard due to blown or even worn out engines. The drivetrains have always outlasted the body and/or undercarriage that wound up so bad that I was unable to justify repairing the vehicle any longer regardless of how well it still ran. My current truck/daily driver is a 1996 S10 which is the only vehicle I have ever purchased brand new. Once the warranty had expired, I have done all the PM on it myself using Fram filters. At 315K+ miles on all original internals, it still runs 60 lbs oil pressure consistently and doesn't use or leak a drop of oil in between services. I did upgrade to Fram's mid grade filter (TG vs PH) when they came out for the improved filtering and have used them in all the vehicles I have serviced which includes my wife's past and current vehicles as well as those of my FIL/MIL too. Just my $0.02 on this subject. That being said, the couple of times that I myself have purchased filters for 1 of the ACs, I did so at the local AGCO dealer because we were actually fortunate enough to have 1 right in my hometown 3 miles from the house and they knew our tractors well. ------------- "My name is Lionel and I'm an Allisoholic" |

I've been a Fram dealer since 1968. Ran them on my Drag cars through the years and never had an oil pressure problem or lost an engine. Those engines when I ran them ran in the 7800-8200 rpm range all day long with a Hilborn injected sbc with 5.57 gears and a Liberty four speed tranny behind it in a 66' Nova. Never had a problem. Used the by-pass Frams on my Tractors and never had a problem. The problem I'm having now is getting them. Over the years the tri-state warehouses I dealt with closed up due to the poor economy years back, so my Fram days are limited. Looks like after 51 years of selling Fram, I may be moving to Fleetguard or Wix filters. Time will tell...
