Resealing a pump on our 64 d17, and put new plates and seal kit in it from agco, the pump will not turn freely once the bolts are even snug, it has a lot of resistance. Is this how they are supposed to be or is something wrong? The plates are the only thing different. It had a new seal kit put in last year and they failed due to the plates having grooves in them from the old seals. ------------- 1958 D17, got a lot more just need to find out what years they are. |

| Usually takes a pair of pliers to turn one with new seals. You have oil on the gears and plates, right ?? |

It has a film of oil but not much. We had to use a large Allen wrench in the drive gear and it was pretty hard to turn. ------------- 1958 D17, got a lot more just need to find out what years they are. |

If it was mine, I would be disassembling the pump so I could use a micrometer to measure the thickness of the gears and the body. The new plates are thicker than the originals by .010 each everything else is the same as it was before. ------------- 1958 D17, got a lot more just need to find out what years they are. |

It has rubber and plastic seals that come in the kit I assume the plastic goes in the groove first followed by the rubber going against the plates. ------------- 1958 D17, got a lot more just need to find out what years they are. |

yes . blue against the plates. the pump will turn hard when together but should turn with pliers |

I thought the rubber was to seal it like the old ones how does the plastic seal? ------------- 1958 D17, got a lot more just need to find out what years they are. |

oil pressure from the gears, moves through the hole in the wear plate and pushes the wear plate against the gears making a tight seal. the blue plastic can take the oil pressure to make the seal. the rubber would just blow out. the old seal used the metal to hold the rubber in place, but it wore in to the wear plates. |

A suggestion; beings you have the pump removed & disassembled. Take some time and remove the sump casting, screen and magnetic donut-shaped filings "trap" You'd be surprised at what can accumulate over the years. It can be a bear to get off, so you'll need a set of gaskets for sure, and possibly a new screen if the old one is damaged in any way. And some Permatex #2
