In a thread, a while back, I said I would calculate the cup in a G226 engine and post the results. I was sent a piston, with a casting # of 229717, in the cup of the piston, it's marked 229718. It was sent to me by Strokendiesel002 and I thank him, very much.

By my measurement, the cup is 56cc and the compression height is 2.530. I guestimated the the head gasket was .040 thick and that the inside diameter was 4.18". If anyone has the actual figures, I can modify the out put but, this gets it pretty close. .040 is pretty common for thickness and with the overbore kits, at 4.125 the inside diameter has to be larger than that. I also used DrAllis deck height dimension of 12.656.

If anyone has different info from what I'm showing, or any mistakes I've made, please let me know.

I will re-verify the 56cc in the next few days. Here is the results:

You're not too far off at that figure. A-C advertised comp ratio to be 7.25 to 1 on a D-17 engine. I think your head gasket is much closer to .060" which would bring your calculated number down a bit.

Does anyone have a used head gasket that they can measure for thickness?

Everything except valve head standout, which technically should be covered in chamber volume, which technically doesn't apply on a perfectly flat cylinder head.

I did think of that but it's a variable, all by itself.

The margin will vary and the depth that you narrow the top of the seat.
